Although it appears that, at one time, rosewood was standard for 12-str. bridge plates, the original plate in this 1967 is solid maple. Thus, we'll stick with that materiel, but are incorporating the cross-grain laminate idea as previously mentioned.

Here's a new picture showing the laser cut spruce plugs used to fill the old pinholes. Nice undersaddle router work, huh? Don't know who committed that crime, but that will be repaired too.

Although it's done yeoman service over the past 30 years, we will abandon the legacy Highlander pickup, and have ordered a James May Engineering UTP v3.2-ST pickup as its replacement. This may preclude the idea of using a split saddle. More on that later.

Looking good, z!!!! Good luck with your choices.

Hmm... The James May is a soundboard transducer, z. It's not a UST, so I really doubt that a split saddle would be a problem. However, I think you're better off with a straight saddle anyway.

If you're into shaping the sound of the UltraTonic, @Christopher Cozad suggested the Audio Sprockets ToneDexter as foot pedal processor that seems really cool.

Oh, are you re-using the original bridge or did you get a new one? If the former, I'm curious why you're plugging the pin holes...

That is indeed an extraordinarily difficult plate to remove even though it was done with HHG. The problem is the braces right up against the plate. Your luthier did a fine job removing it. What was wrong with the original plate though? Usually when they are cracked they come out in pieces, which can make it easier too. I'm not sure about vintage Guilds but removing an original plate on a vintage Martin makes a huge impact on its value.
