Pretty good catch, Darryl. I think there was only one shot from the front, and the headstock was at an angle, and the picture was fuzzy, and the clouds caused a glare, and there was a mist of cigarette smoke....but I think you're right - Starfire 12.

And I think the other guy is on a Fender Coronado. I take a mild, barely explainable interest in that old series. Worked with a guy for a couple years who had one. I liked it, but mostly because he was a very good player.

I'm still working on finding a recording, but I do have a few photos.

This intended to take you to a photo album. You may have to sign up, though. If it doesn't work let me know and I'll email an" invitation".

Here's a hint of what's there:

THE OTHER GUY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THAT other guy is Johnny Shines, and that ain't no Coronado !
It's a Gibson Trini Lopez.

"The other guy", indeed !!

You may surmise that I have a great fondness for Johnny Shines !

Knew I'd seen that video before; Bettie Fikes, the next act on the Youtube clip, was the giveaway.

"Mississippi Delta Blues" taped live at the second annual Mississippi Delta Blues Festival 1980.

Don't have DVD details, but VHS version available on Kay Jazz KJ 081

Dear coastie99,

By way of apology for my blues ignorance, please accept the following.

From http://blues.about.com/od/halloffame/p/blproshines.htm
Tennessee-born Johnny Ned Shines grew up in the Mississippi Delta area and developed his own vocal and slide guitar style along with an uncompromising conscience. Known to speak out on social issues and take political stands, his checkered career spanned from the 1920's until the 1990's. He passed in 1992.

And for the Gibson Trini Lopez model mis-sighting (though one can review that video and the Coronado photos and easily understand the mistake):

From http://www.provide.net/~cfh/gibson3.html

Trini Lopez Standard and Custom (Deluxe) Electric Archtops
Available: 1964 to 1971
Collectibility Rating: Standard model: D+, Deluxe model: D- (the standard model is a funky ES-335, but the full depth Deluxe model is just not desirable).

1964 Trini Lopez Standard specs:
ES-335 thinline body, 16" wide, double rounded cutaway, diamond-shaped soundholes, 2 humbucking pickups, tuneomatic bridge, trapeze tailpiece with raised diamond and model name on wooden insert, laminated beveled edge pickguard, single bound top and back, 24.75" scale, bound fingerboard with slashed diamond inlays, 6 on a side tuner configuration, decal peghead logo, cherry finish (also seen with Sparkling Burgundy or Pelham Blue metallic finishes).

1964 Trini Lopez Custom (Deluxe) specs:
Full depth body, double pointed cutaways (like a Barney Kessel), diamond-shaped soundholes, 2 humbucking pickups, 3-way switch on treble cutaway, standby switch on bass cutaway, tuneomatic bridge, trapeze tailpiece with raised diamond and model name on wooden insert, bound pickguard and peghead, triple bound top and back, bound fingerboard with slashed diamond inlays, 6 on a side tuner configuration, cherry sunburst finish.
Both Trini Lopez models discontinued 1971.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trini_Lopez
Trini’s popularity led the Gibson Guitar Corporation to ask him in 1964 to design a guitar for them. He ended up designing two: The Trini Lopez Standard, a rock and roll model based on the Gibson ES-335 semi-hollow body, and the Lopez Deluxe, a variation of a Gibson jazz guitar designed by Barney Kessel.

Well,,,,,, OK then, yer forgiven !

Most certainly was reasonable to make the Coronado call given the little visible detail on the video.

While I adore Johnny Shines, I don't really think he shone (groan !) on electric.
He deserved greater fame on his own merits, rather than the celebrity he garnered from being a some-time companion of Robert Johnson's.

He and Fred McDowell are my two greatest heroes.

And I REALLY wasn't affronted in any way !

There is some funny stuff happening here at the ole LTG site.

Real nice recovery Mark, very genteel. I've learned to not post everything that comes to mind till I think it over some. Even then strange things happen & I often have regrets.

It's been my pleasure.

Johnny Shines used to "tour" with Robert Johnson, right? With a freight car for a jet, a horse-drawn cart for a limo, and an alley for a motel.

And wasn't Lockwood a cousin or something to Johnson?
