O.K.. so what am I supposed to do.... called a guy who listed a '70's X-175 on Cragslist, wasn't sure I wanted to buy it but he told me to "live with it for a while...." so its at my house. The sound through my Roland JC is awesome; finish is worn on the neck where it has seen a lot of play; recently set up and frets dressed... and the cost is about a grand. Should I ever give it back?

Decisions, Decisions....

Well no kidding! Give it back? What kind of talk is that?

And what kind of a sales line is "Live with it for a while"? Going to resist? I think not.

David,

Sounds like a real dog. I advise giving it back and passing my email address on to the seller. I'd like to explain the shortcomings of the deal more fully to him...

It's a good thing more dealers don't adopt these cutthroat tactics. (...Right ?)

Worn (but not abused) necks are the best. It's like that patina they are always talking about on Antiques Roadshow, where if you clean it up or fix it, you destroy half the value. Based on your current list of guitars, I think you need it.

Right on bro,

Only the best guitars get played enough to wear the finish off the neck.

Newbie here loves his recent '77 X-175 purchase......and I probably paid a bit too much. All tweaking aside, I think it can be very difficult to find an archtop with a tone you love...so go for it. Is it natural? Mine is, with some cool checking at the edges...

Patina... I like that! I also like the way they whole thing jsut looks played -- not beat up, but played. A few dings, checked finish, looks like it should after working for 30 years.

Of course, I'll have to sell something -- would anyone like a DV-52 with a real fancy pickup? I promise not to overcharge on shipping!

'Attaboy...! Make her sing, man.

"California. California, I'm coming home.
Won't you make me feel good rock and roll band
I'm your biggest fan.
California, I'm coming home."

Joni Mitchell from the album BLUE.

Is that where you picked up your handle?

No, but this makes me smile very much. And I'm pulling the sheet music out for California the moment I finish printing my wife's boarding passes!

Party at my house.........

I can't play Joni stuff at all. I've tried. I bought her books 25 years ago, but these were laughably unproductive purchases for me. I just couldn't make them work. "California" is a classic example. I can come close on the folkie Joni's but she leaves me in the dust after BLUE. I think it is really hard for a guy to interpret her music, no matter how much you love it.

Her use of alternative tunings also gave me headaches.

She was always over my head, man. What else can I say?

Sorry. I felt guilty and stupid as soon as I posted it, especially after my previous comments about misogynistic comments on this board. Never again.

Hey, no problem, John. Indeed I felt that I had crossed the point of indiscretion by comparing Joni Mitchell to an X-170. Guilt and purgatory pretty much across the board.

But California bit on the whole thing. Clearly a pervert.
