Hi guys,
i'm a new member and I've found you on link page of Hans Moust.
I'm very happy about that because I really love Guild Guitars and this forum looks full of useful infos.
I'm from Italy and I own one M75 1977, a DC1E from 1996 and a S100 from 1973.
I bought it on ebay USA and yesterday I received it.
I'm not sure if finish is original or not because I'v e never seens before a natural S100.
What do you think about that?
The guitar looks very good but got some small problems:

the second fret is a little "out" of fretboard and causes buzzing
The fretboard looks really "flat" and is really different from M75's, is that normal?
What kind of frets does this guitar got originally?
I would like to install jumbo frets, do you this is a good idea?
The last problem is the bridge...I'm not sure if is original or not because is really more curved than the one on my M75. The edges of bridge are really close to guitar's boby...it looks so strange.
Some one could help me?

That's the ebay auction link, I hope I've done a good choice.
Bye

Eugenio

Welcome Arossis,
Nice looking guitar. It looks like a refinish to me, but I am not an expert. Someone else is sure to comment!!

My first thought was refin as well, but there is one nearly identical pictured in Hans book.

Nice score!

Natural finish on S-100

Hello Don,

The Natural finish was indeed available at the time but it was a gloss finish. The S-100 in the eBay auction looks like a satin finish which is not what Guild did at the time.

Hi Eugenio, from New Zealand.

That is a really nice looking S-100.
I think that the natural-finish ones are the most attractive, and that certainly is a nice piece of Mahogany.

Matte-finish (to me) is more appealing than gloss too.

Enjoy.

Hi guys,
thanks for answers!
In this web site http://www.epinions.com/inst-Electric_Guitars-S100/display_~full_specs
they mention to a "hand rubbed" color. I know that this is not a qualified web site but amybe that's true.
Yesterday evening I played it more and with my good valve amp: I really dunno if this guitar is original but...It's really nice to play! This guitar got an amazing tone!
I don't really care too much if is original: after the deep test I definitely love it!
A friend that own a gibson SG told me that is axe, compared to my S100, is good only for the fireplace!

Finish on S-100

Hello Arossis,

Welcome to the forum. Yes, there was a 'handrubbed' finish but not during the period that your S-100 is from. The 'handrubbed' finish was first introduced on the S-100 Reissues from the '90s.
So, your S-100 probably doesn't have the original finish but the most important thing is that you enjoy the guitar.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Thank you very much Hans and may thanks for your book too!

I would like to receive some opinions about the bridge..I'm not sure is original: setting screws are surely NOT original, and what about the rest?
It seems to be too much arched..

I believe that volume/tone pins are not original too (probably because of paint stripping) and pickups screw probably are not original too (not so important!).

Maybe some one got original setting screw?

Bye and thanks to everyone!

Edited your post so the pictures aligned better.

Your bridge looks like a Muller AdjustoMatic which would be original, but the posts are something else. Perhaps just missing the height adjustment portion?

Also looks like the original knobs, & like you said....pickup screws, even if they aren't orginal, not a big deal.

Thank you very much dklsplace, I didn't know how to align it better...

What's "posts"? Indicator pins of potentiometers?

The height adjustment can be done by exagonal scews you can see in the photo. I would like to have original "wheels", I'm searching for them...

I love your friends comment!! SG's are decent guitars, but I feel that Guild surpassed them with the S100.

DAMMIT !!

Repeated viewing of Arossis's S-100 has turned a casual desire for an S-100 into a full-frontal GAS attack !!

Question: What's involved in a "hand-rubbed" finish ? (No, Darryl !!)

Is the Mahogany "coloured", or left natural ?
Is the guitar finished with a shot of clear, matte lacquer ?

That S-100 just looks so lovely, and, well....... Natural !

I've never played an SG or an S-100, so cannot make any sort of sonic comparison, but the aesthetics of the S-100 just hands-down beat the SG; those horns just look so RIGHT !

Reckon if I got an S-100 and fitted it with Bareknuckle Mississippi Queens (hot humbucker look-alike P90's), I'd have an industrial-strength WEAPON.

Eugenio, when you type your text into the window & hit submit, your are "posting" to the forum. I simple edited the layout of your earlier post so the pictures would all align.

Regarding your bridge. This is what I would expect to see on your guitar. This is from an M80 project someone has posted on their website.

Hand rubbed finish should be done by some kind of very hard wax for closing small cavities on wood.
Then you have to take away excesses of wax and make, by rubbing, surface smooth and almost "shining". Usually is made on violins.
The same finish is done on guns (the wood part for hand, I dunno english word).

Bye bye
