Some folks wind every bit of wire onto the capstan.
Some leave the ends dangling - creating a built-in rhythm section and threatenng every eye in the vicinity.
Some coil up the residual part of the strings and create decorative circles around the peghead.
Some clip the ends near the capstans to get them out of the way.

How do you express your string ends?

Interesting question, depending on what book you read you get different answers.

Last time I posted pictures of copywritten material, after a couple days the images became unavailable. So if you don't see the pics I'm guessing that's why.

Page 13 of the online Guild owners manual illustrates a pretty clean method
http://www.guildguitars.com/resources/p ... s_2002.pdf

My handy, rare, Will Martin, limited edition Guitar owners manual shows another

My Guitar Player Repair Guide shows yet another:
[img:338:450]http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid219/p260bbcd3e9376613f30cd57e19d73ecd/ebfa0e66.jpg[/img][/img][img:450:338]http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid219/pf830734091b50a3f367f11d57f78ca2c/ebfa14ab.jpg[/img]

Here's what I do, I can't remember where I read this method.

Step one is to run the string thru the pin & trim it off just short of the next pin.
[img:450:338]http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid219/paafcc7dedd928819229c65de98ad4ec2/ebfa0a78.jpg[/img] Next I bend a nice crisp 90 about 1/4 in from the end of the string, This allows me to hook the string in the pin while winding.[img:450:338]http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid219/p51471c4b9a54cd7746abc794cb4c73f5/ebfa063d.jpg[/img]

Finished product looks like this, doesn't seem like it should hold, but if I take care and keep the windings tight it holds just fine. Didn't believe it myself till I tried it. And no, that's not a scratch on the headstock, it's dust !!

I usually try and get an extra pinch on the unwound strings

That's the way I put my strings on. Well, not the exact procedure, but no knots or any of that stuff. Been doing it that way for 25 years, and never had any slippage issues.

I cut a little further past than Jeff shows & then give it a loop. As done for so long at Guild. No other reason, its just how I do it.

I do mine differently, but always attempt to have at least 2 full windings on the post.

The sort of locked loop that gets tucked under the string, is very frustrating to me. My repair guy does that and I always forget to ask him not to, when I'm leaving a project with him that includes a restring. It's unduly difficult to get that last inch of string off the post without scratching the headstock.

For years, I've been winding them as shown in the Martin guide that comes with their guitars (probably on their website). Basically, one full wind back and at least two forward. Then I snip the excess and bend back the exposed sharp end so I don't prick my finger and bleed.
