I can't figure it out, what is this part of the strap for? (The upper part of the pic)

Jeff has the right idea. But, it's much more functional when the jack is on the side of the guitar (like the archtops and electrics) rather than in the end-pin. Then the strap takes the cord strain in movement (or when fools like me step on the cord, etc.) , rather than the phono plug and jack.

Pull a foot or more of cord through the loop. Then it acts as the safety loop for walking on the cord as John mentioned just like if you ran a loop through your belt loop as I often do to provide some safety slack.

Belts can have slack? :shock:

Everytime I tighten my belt. lately, I feel like I'm performing a physics experiment.

Back to the gym in January, you know, after the holiday feasting and such. :D
