Not too crazy 'bout definitive lists, but the following 5 albums, should give an idea of my musical tastes :

Entire Hank Williams Collection
The Wildest from Specialty (Ace compilation)
Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant : Stratosphere Boogie
Los Lobos : La pistola y el corazon
Best of the Beach Boys

Curious what will come up from you fellow forumites.

And a verry happy new year to all of you...

I simply cannot settle on a "Definitive Five", but I can say that "The Band", by The Band is my clear favourite desert island album.

Well, actually; Neil Young's "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" would be in there somewhere too.

I've many times tried to figure the ultimate blues band.
I've got Otis Spann and Walter Horton in there, but can never make any other decisions !

fantastic choice Coastie, funny you should say that as im listening to the last Waltz this second, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is just ten times better then the studio cut and Levons so great

my 5 (although perhaps not definative) could be

The Band - The Last Waltz
Neil Young - On The Beach
Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run (JUST pips Ashbury park)
Elton John - Madman Across The Water
Wilco - A Ghost Is Born

Id put tonights The Night in there aswell if i could and Tumbleweed Connection is another great Elton record...see im rubbish at this

No, I've decided; I simply cannot pick a top 5 'cos there'd have to be........

The Who. "Live At Leeds"
Some Dr. Feelgood. Probably "Down By The Jetty"
Some Tull. Probably "Stand Up"
Some Fab. Thunderbirds.
Some Robin Trower.
Some Peter Green / Fleetwood Mac.

And on and on !
Quite hopeless !!

What I WOULDN"T have.............

U2
The Eagles (But no problem with Joe Walsh)
Bruce Springsteen (Sorry America !)
Diana Krall.
The "Next Big Thing" that crap TV ads. tell me that I must have.

Best of Jim Hall
Elvin Bishop - Ace in the Hole
Don Byron (with Bill Frisell on guitar)
Salvador - Live: Albuquerque

Definately no U2 for me either!

but were gonna fall out over Springsteen, forget the rock anthems and some of his later stuff

pick yourself up a copy of any of the early records Ashbury Park, E Street Shuffle, Born To Run, Darkness On The Edge of Town, The River...you will be blown away, especially the first 2..very soulful records

Leo Kottke - 6 & 12 String Guitar
Leo Kottke - My Feet Are Smiling
Peter, Paul, and Mary - Peter, Paul, and Mary
Jennifer Warnes - Jennifer
Don Ellis - Live at Fillmore

Life altering, all, but just the starting point.

Peter, Paul, and Mary - Peter, Paul, and Mary
:)

I can't remember the songs on the album you quoted but of course you know some of PPM hits were written by Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver & Bob Dylan.

There is too much music out there to narrow it down to 5.

... and Woody Guthrie, and Paul Stanley, and on and on ......

I was very happy to read the liner notes and follow up with other songs by those writers. But this album, and others, contained the first arrangements I heard of those songs. They are definitive performances lodged in my consciousness.

Five is ridiculously few, but it's an interesting exercise. "If you were stranded on a desert island , which five albums...." kind of thing.

I don't think I can pick 5 favorites, my tastes are changing more and more now.

I was born in '61 so I didn't really pay much attention to music until I was in my teens, spent most of the early years playing baseball and football and stuff.

When music clicked in and took a bit of a hold, it was Bob Seger, Van Morrison, The Who, Supertramp, The Guess Who, Fleetwood Mac kind of stuff that really got me. Gerry Rafferty's, Night Owl, was great crusing around town. The Pretenders, The Kinks, Devo, The Police, Pink Floyd.

I didn't care for The Stones or Zepelin or AC/DC but I like them more now.

My tastes are all over now, I love Pandora. Whenever something strikes me, I put it in the file and hear a whole new world of different music.[/u]
