Al's the man!

Always one of my favorite players, the CD from the three of them on that same evening is incredible!

I still remember the first time I ever saw or heard Al Di Meola. It was late one night when my whole family had gone to bed. I musta been about 8 or 9 and I snuck into the basement to watch TV. Don Kirshner's Rock Concert came on, and I remember seeing Al Di Meola with a black Les Paul. The camera was shooting from a bottom perspective looking up at Al on stage. Of course, it was the 70s too, so he had on some kind of shiny bell bottoms. He looked like he was about 9 feet tall! And then he started blasting these crazy jazz fusion licks faster than I'd ever seen anyone play before. I couldn't even blink or breathe. WOW!

I've long since outgrown my fascination with Al Di Meola, but it sure was an eyeopener for me who had only listened to classic rock radio and Top 40. There were a few gems on "Night in San Francisco" and "Passion, Grace, and Fire"--a whole lotta notes to process!
