I was checking out my Guild serial number list and I noticed a little wrinkle.

Now I know that Hans has said that there's a lot of errors in the Guild listings so maybe this is one.

The guitar line in question are the X-79's with the AD100XXX serial numbers.

In 1981 the last number was; AD100304, so they made 304 that year.

In 1982 the last number was; AD100342, so they made 38 that year.

In 1983 the last number was; AD100509, so they made 167 that year.

In 1984 the last number was; AD101705, so they made 1196 that year?

In 1985 the last number was; AD101790, so they made 85 that year.

You have to question the big jump in '84. I find it hard to believe they made 1197 that year. I first though that maybe the "1705" was a typo and should be "705" which means they would have made 196 that year. (A more reasonable quantity).

And then did they carry the typo "1" into '85?

The problem with this theory is that my X-79-3 is stamped with the serial number AD101044.

Now if you follow the "typo" theory, the guitar would have to also be a typo and should be either AD100044 or AD100144.

Just to add a little more murkyness to the situation, My X-79 has the serial number AD100777 which has the later metal knobs. The X-79-3 which supposely came after it has the earlier plastic "speed" knobs!

Gotta love them crazies at Guild don't ya?

I'm sure Hans will have this all straightened out in "The Book II". :D

(It's stuff like this that probably takes so long)

Yes, there are numerous ones and this is one of them but it's not what you think!

In 1981 the last number was; AD100304, so they made 304 that year.

In 1982 the last number was; AD100342, so they made 38 that year.

No, that's not what happened! I wasn't planning on giving that information away, but since we're here I might as well tell you what did happen. Like a little 'sneak preview'!

The last numbers for the resp. years should be:

1981: AD100304

1982: AD101342

1983: AD101509

1984: AD101705

1985: AD101790

What I stated above solves that problem.

Just to add a little more murkyness to the situation, My X-79 has the serial number AD100777 which has the later metal knobs. The X-79-3 which supposely came after it has the earlier plastic "speed" knobs!

That's the problem with comparing serial numbers and parts. First of all the sequence of the serial numbers is not automatically the sequence in which the guitars were finished in 'final assembly'. Secondly, parts like knobs can be easily switched.

I'm sure Hans will have this all straightened out in "The Book II".

There were hundreds (yes, you read this right!) of mistakes but this was an easy one and I'm not going to tell you more.

Sincerely,

I'd guess on the 1038 number. IIRC, they were actively promoting the guitar, with the Rossington-Collins Band, among others.

Hi Hans,

So in 1982 did Guild really sell 1038 X79's or 38 of them?

Mike

If they had done 38 in 1982 I'm convinced the model would have been discontinued by 1983!

So yes, they did 1038 during 1982 and when you know on what date they started in 1981 then the amount of 304 X-79s for that first year makes sense as well.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Hans,

You do you know, of course, that you will be making cameo apprearances as guest detective in episodes of Geezerman, don't you?

Thanks for all your contributions to this forum!

Hans, your are the MAN!!!

Well I was right about a typo "1", I just had it in the wrong place.

OK I won't ask anymore serial number questions, I'll be a good boy and wait for the book.

Although I do have some questions about model numbers? Is that fair game?

Thanks again!

Man I love this place!

Hey hideglue,

From what I hear it looks like some of them are doing pretty well in the outside world. I guess as long as they take their medicine on time!

Cheers!

Hans
