I found one of these today in an obscure little hole in the wall shop, darndest shop, chuck full of vintage amps & guitars, no less than 5 vintage Guild acoustics hanging on the wall. Proprietor calls himself the Guild Whore. Tells me he has at least 3 Guild Archtops upstairs, X 50, T 100, X 150, (50's & 60's models) maybe more & more old amps. Tells me he's cooking a deal on a mint M20 from the 60's.

Dirty bugger wasn't inclined to go dig them out or discuss prices, made some kind of reference to his upstairs inventory as his retirement. After discussing my Guild inventory he tells me he "Just Loves Trades". I ain't got much I'm willing to part with but I not adverse to dropping by with a couple just to smoke him out a bit.

Freaking shop has been there for 12 years & I never knew it existed.

Darn Amp looks brand new. Judging by how this Ebay auction is going the asking price of $700 may be a bit steep.

Allowing you 'first dibs' of course, you might ask him if he'd allow you to inventory his stash and front it to us; showcase it so to speak, see if any of it brings offers. Since this crowd, above all, has an impression of what Guild stuff 'goes for', he'll get about what the stuff is worth ...bypassing craigslist and eBay .. and you might get a couple of sets of strings out of it!!

Just a thought. j

I'll take a GF60, and an F30. A 'burst finish on the F30 if there's a choice.

Somehow I'm of the opinion the new found vintage ?Guild dealer isn't all that interested in my (our) opinion of his prices. What I saw seemed a bit steep. He seemed a bit testy when it came to me actually touching his stuff.

I'm still thinking on how to weasle my way into this fella's inner circle. Maybe if he was to recieve a couple dozen phone calls from various members inquiring of his services & referencing the Geezer that stopped in last Thursday.

Next assault I'm taking Red with me, Her femine "charms" usually help the cause. Mebbe Sunday when we return the Grandsons. Timing will be good, she's picking up her new Toyota Prius this afternoon. My domestic stock is up.

All the vintage Guild acoustics were mahogany, not a Rosewood in sight. Never got to actually see the Archtops.

Sellers w/ shops have the overhead burden that the eBay/Craigslist crowd don't have. He's probably heard it 100 times: 'what a rip, saw one like it on eBay for half blah blah' It's a little easier to help them w/ the overhead by paying a premium if you get something for it - like a good nature for starters ... how about the amps?

How about the amps???

Well, you already know the starting point on the Gretsch,

Second example: Harmony H400A, OK shape, hardly perfect cosmetically , cobwebby & dusty: $175.00. Too many others to keep track of without notes.

Interesting; never had the pleasure. This model uses a 35W4 rectifier (110V in, no power transformer) and the 5OC5 output tube. In contrast to the Silvertones, these are not doing as well with collectors.

Well now!! We returned to grandsons yesterday & stopped off on the way back. Seems the proprietor of this establishment has a weak spot, less than 30 seconds after Red & I walk into his shoppe
yesterday he initates a conversation on Viagra.

Contemplated shooting him, but Red gives me the look & all's okay.
No safety in me being unarmed at the time, Red's fully capable of doing her own shooting. Things calmed down after a few minutes & a bloodletting was avoided.

Steady stream of Geezerly, "Neer do well", guitar characters in & out of the place, regulars I'd guess. My presence hardly noteworthy.

Here's a rundown of Guild inventory, best as I can remember:

Lower level on display for sale with prices running between 700 & 950, Mostly 1970's, none mint, some pretty well Guilded, but all decent players:

D 25M, D35, D40, D212 & I think (?) a J 4 (, these are available for cash).

After some discussion of what I might possibly, maybe, have available for trade I was invited Upstairs. The man says he's not 100% sure what he has up there & I believe him, biggest pile of vintage gits I've ever seen in one room.

Cased up, mixed in with probably 50 or 60, (100) ??? various vintage Gibsons, Fenders, Martins & Lord only knows what else, as best I can remember:

DV 52, D 25, D50, M 20, G 37, (not really a G 37, but a similar maple archback), 59 X 175 ?, 60 T 100D, X 50 & a perhaps a couple others he couldn't seem to find.

Generally the upstairs inventory is better quality & shape (possible exception the archtops). Officially not for sale, Open to trades.
General public disallowed.

The T 100 is calling out to me, Player in nice shape, original case, neck pickup was weak so he switched it to a P 90(?) ,original PU is in the case. Doesn't look like the guitar has any other mods.

Just another Saturday afternoon here in the centre of the known vintage Guild universe.
