What's a good "starter" Guild to get?

I'm keen on getting my first electric guitar, playing rhythm, and I'm wondering what there is in the Guild line that would work well for a moderate buck.

What can you suggest? Many thanks.

Fender has yet to reintroduce Guild electrics, although there are always rumors, so the answer to your question would be found in the used/vintage market. Several posters think highly of the S-100 and cousins (double cutaway, solid body) but there are differences and preferences based upon era. I'm just a bass player trying to keep my post count up so the S-100 just gives you something to focus on until someone who really has an opinion can start asking you about your preferences.

Hi Siwash; I think Frono has you headed in the right direction. Don't know what 'moderate' means to you but, at least on eBay, the solid body S-100s - originals or re-issues - run roughly $800 - $1,100; can be less if instrument has lots of mars and scars like Maxter's before his fix - but usually not much more.
Good luck! cj

If you are willing to spend up to $800 on guitar than yes and s-100 would be a great guitar to start out with. You can find some good deals once in a while though. I just saw a '72 s-100 go for $538 on ebay, and the only things wrong were one of the pups was not original and it was missing a piece of the binding.
Check altjogger's thread called Guild S-100 buying advice to read a little more about differences in the early ones and the reissues.

Depending on your idea of what "a moderate buck" is second the S-100s. If moderate means far less, the Dearmond M-series (M-65, -75, -80) seem to be respectable players.

Hey Siwash,
I would suggest that you should think about what kind of style and sound your rhythmguitarplaying is.
more folk, rock, jazz?
would you like to have a solid-body, semi-hollow or hollow electric guitar?
Do you like clean guitar sounds or more fuzzy sounds?
this might help for the choice.

and regarding the price, I think every guild electric under 500 US $ in good condition will be a steal (don't know about the 80's-90's metalstyle-guitars KURT???) but I did not play one bad guild in 25 years.

Just happens to be a Dearmond M75 down your way for $100, listed on CL about 4:30 PM yesterday.
