My appreciation of Chet has always been somewhat intellectual. I could sense some good guitar picking on the records I heard, but never developed an affinity to the sound due to the other production elements (strings, sterile rhythm tracks, etc.). For anyone in a similar situation I recommend the 2 CD "Chet Atkins: Solo Sessions". From the web page: "Chet Atkins recorded much of his work over the years in his home studio located in the basement of his Nashville home. After his death, family and friends found an astounding new collection of 28 solo guitar arrangements, which now form the basis for Chet Atkins: Solo Session (2003 CGP Records)."

My appreciation of Chet has moved from my head to my heart.
