My boss saw the new book I got (The Guitar Amp Handbook*, by Dave Hunter) sitting on my desk today. I'm reading it to prepare for the amp rebuild I'm planning with my kids this summer. The boss asks me, "Are you building your own tube amp?"
"I hope to," says I.
We chat a little about it and he asks, "Have y'ever seen ZVEX amps?"
:( :? Uhh.h..h

Doesn't look like it comes in a kit, and they ain't cheap ($489 at one local guitar shoppe), but ain't it just too damn cute!

Funny enough, I just sold one of those! It was pretty cool, but in the end I got tired of its slightly brittle sound. Compared to my other small-ish tube amps, it was just lacking in that "tube magic." Might have been the solid-state rectumfinder--no sag.

If you're thinking of a low-watt tube head, I recommend looking at D-Lab's stuff. It's all hand-wired, very high quality, but not very high priced. Here's a combo he's got on ebay right now:http://cgi.ebay.com/D-Lab-3-Tube-Co...ryZ10171QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem He's got other amps as well, including some very nice looking heads in cherry cabinets... Also see my post here about the AC4 he made for me.
Good stuff, Maynard.

Has the same 6AQ5/6005 that Dane has in his new-to-him Fender amp ... that later gave way to the 6BQ5/EL84 ... nice looking workmanship!
