In the beginning, '65 until -?, the PU was in a middle to bridge position and the thumb and finger rests were at the neck. Then they reversed positions so that the PU was in the neck position but the rests were "even" with each other. This configuration ended no later than '67. Then the rests were staggered so that the E side rest was by the PU but the G side rest was staggered towards the bridge. When the SF II was introduced, it had no rests.

Do I have all the configurations and in the right chronological order?
Can the configurations be used to reliably date a bass?
If I ever see a Starfire with two pickups and thumb and finger rests does that mean the bass was originally a SF I and the PU and electronics were added or the rests were added?
Do the '90's reissues violate any of the above?

Thanks.

kind of a late reply, but i do believe you're right. also i've never seen a later model (90s etc) that had rests.

haha thanks. it just sums up my playing... when i don't know where to take the jam i just ask myself "wwjd?"
I wouldn't recommend applying this to anything beyond playing bass though ;)
