Soo..you think anybody in the general populace (guitars) will see this?

(Although, I'm not sure if you're making fun with me, or of me!)

I don't play bass that often, but when I do I never use the pinky.

When I play solo jazz guitar, I use the pinky constantly.

When I'm playing in my band, and I'm soloing, I don't use it that much

:oops:
Since I don't play guitar it had not even occurred to me that it was a reasonable question to ask guitarists.

I use it in bass a lot.

When I took up fingerpickin' blues acoustic guitar, one of the hardest tasks was fretting the G chord with the pinky on the high E string 3rd fret. In a lot of songs that pinky is constantly moving around while holding that chord; so now I use the pinky a lot more. For awhile I considered using "Blind Lemon Pinky G" as my blues handle. Thought i'd start a blues club & name it the "Blind Lemon Pinky G Spot". My wife didn't approve, so i dropped the project.

And lost in the mists of memory is a comic skit (not original with me) involving the blues player "Blind Lemon Pledge".

I use my pinky alot when I play bass, bolstered by all my other fingers like Carol Kaye teaches.
For really fast runs, I do use it independently.

Interesting to see a thread resurface after four years and intriguing to see that the topic is even poll-worthy. I use my pinky all the time and can't imagine NOT using it. :untroubled:

Just sayin',
Joe

*Maybe this is just about bass? If so, never mind and oops! :redface:

When I started it, it was just about bass, but there is room for everyone.

Since the time I started the poll, I have actually been taking bass lessons and am now convinced that my left hand technique has lots of room for improvement :)

Ya got to love it when old threads come back to life.

Interestingly enough, for me when I only played guitar I never used my pinky, (for single note soloing or course, you have to use a pinky for chords!) but when I took up the bass I pretty much had to learn to use my pinky to make the runs. Then when I would go back to guitar I would now use my pinky!

If you're going up 4 frets, you have to use your pinky. The ring finger just won't do. If you're taking a G7 down to D7 you can do it one note at a time with your pinky. Adding a G to a first position E chord and dropping to open E, these are a few of my favorite things. And don't forget Pinky Tuscadero was pretty hot. :eagerness:

I was more of a leather Tuscadero fan. After all, she played the bass!

Who of course was played by Suzi Quatro!

Watch closely, does she use her pinky?

I use my pinky on bass, especially for being a guitar player and playing short scale bass. I could not imagine not using it. having enough of a challenge with 4 fingers, why would I limit myself to 3? Need all the help I can get!

Of course I use it. Proper fretting hand technique (especially with regards to wrist angle and where your thumb is) is critical to playing without damaging your hands/wrists/arms. So that puts you in a great location to use all four fingers. Simply couldn't play bass without all four fingers.

And lost in the mists of memory is a comic skit (not original with me) involving the blues player "Blind Lemon Pledge".
Martin Mull had a routine, talking about how even rich folks could get the blues. He played slide on a Uke with a baby bottle. said his grandfather, who they called Blind Lemon Pledge, a successful real estate salesman, taught him a little blues number that started out:

"I woke up this afternoon,
I saw both cars were gone;
I woke up this afternoon (Lawd, lawd)
I saw both cars were gone;
I felt so low down, deep inside
I threw my drink across the lawn."
