I've recently started attending an acoustic night (open mic) which has been great its really inspired me to get back into my guitar playing, I'm looking for suggestions for songs to play and sing.

I currently do a few Neil Young, Behind Blue Eyes by the Who and a couple of Paul Weller songs I've got a couple off Scratch's excellent set list, but wondered what else you guys could suggest that goes down well or sound good on acoustic guitar.

I've got an OK voice but I'm no Jeff Buckley and although I would class myself as intermediate level on the guitar, when playing in front of people I like to try and keep it not to complex as the old nerves kick in a bit when I get up there.

thanks very much

High Flyin' Bird-Jefferson Airplane also Richie Havens and pretty easy
If I Were A Carpenter (ok I know this is a chestnut but hey it's pretty easy and it's due for a nostalgia comeback!)
In My Life-Beatles-Also pretty easy once you get the "hook" figured out
All Along the Watchtower-Dylan and Hendrix-hey it's really only 3 chords and also ready for a nostalgia comeback.
If you haven't figured it out I'm BIG on '60's folk rock, our guitars are (were?) litereally just MADE for it.. there's a HUGE collection of the stuff over at Online Guitar Archives PS I'm sure you guys are like me and won't take money for playing other guys' stuff unless you're payin' 'em the royalty, after all we'd want our stuff to be respected and we probably understand better than anybody that the guys who wrote the stuff deserve their rewards!
Also, EVERYBODY loosens up after a couple of beers.....

I am in the same category - have a blast in the comfort of the basement, but its a nervous, perspiration-drenched experience on the stage in front of people (even when they're encouraging fellow acoustic guitarists). Anyway, apart from the Dylan and Beatles catalog, here are a few that I've really enjoyed playing out with:

'Put the Message in the Box' - World Party
'Handle Me With Care' - Travelling Wilburys
'Love is All Around' - The Troggs
'New Slang' - The Shins
'Atlantic City' - Bruce Springsteen
'Wonderwall' - Oasis
'Drive' - Incubus

Before I had the band I'm in now, I played solo jazz guitar. Before I did that I played solo acoustic (acoustic guitar, harmonica, vocals). I tried to play songs that I could finger pick, or play riffs, solos and chords simultaneously. Here's some of what I played:

Here comes the sun (based on the Paul Simon/George Harrison version from SNL)
Richard Cory (wings over America)
Love me two times (the doors)
Come on into my kitchen (Steve Miller version from The Joker LP)
Ain't no sunshine (Bill Withers)
Little Sister (Based on the Marshall Crenshaw version)
Fool for your stockings (ZZ Top Deguello LP)
message in a bottle (Sting solo version from The secret policeman's other ball)
Blackbird (Beatles)
Light my fire (jose Feliciano version)
Pride and joy (stevie ray vaughn)
You can't do that (Beatles)
I thank you (zz top version)
That'll be the day (buddy holly)
Take the money and run (very easy to play figure pick style)
Time in a bottle (jim croce)
going to california (led zepplin)
Don't mess around with Jim (jim croce)
Rock this town (stray cats)...this was tough one

I use to record myself playing out and I have recordings of these songs, if you're wondering how they sound I could post them.

Graham,

How did you insert that pic?

I'm in the process of making some mp3's from the audio CD I have. I should be posting "going to California" in a few minutes

Photobucket...OK thanks.

I can't use lightning mp3, so I tried uploading the song onto youtube as a video (even though I knew it wasn't a video). Youtube wasn't fooled. I'll stick a picture on it and upload it as a video. Hang on.
