Last year I bought this Sears 1420 on eBay. It was intended to be a project for my son and me. He lost interest.
I took Default's and Cap'n Juan's advice and had c.e. blue install an input transformer for me.
But I wasn't quite satisfied with that. There is no real value in this "antique", so this past weekend, I enlisted my friend, Erv, the luthier, to help me rebuild the cabinet. It was little more than heavy duty cardboard covered in thin vinyl. It was stained and dented, and the grillcloth had rust stains from the staples. Erv graciously took a break from the guitar he's building and went shopping with me for some nice red oak. I found new grill cloth at a local electronics store with a corner dedicated to speakers. Erv walked me through this process 'cause he's a nice guy and he has the tools. So here's a Before and After:

The only thing I might yet do is replace the handle with a leather one, with brass accents to match the corners.
