I picked this one up a few months ago. Dates to late 1983 by the serial number. The pickup locations are different than the 22 fret "pickguard" models. I've only seen one other 20 fretter and that was a red one with a maple neck. This one has the matching headstock. I imagine not many were made.

Like this one?

The other thing about the first/early run of Pilot basses is that the bottom bass bout is not beveled.
They're very uncomfortable to play without it. :(

Here's a 22'r;

I play this one out quite a bit! :D

You also know that they reversed the neck pick-up locations after they abandoned the pickguard?

It really changed the sound! :?

Your link isn't working Michael.

Did you mean this headstock?

Does that count since technically it's a "Pro" Pilot? (the body is also cut different!)

I really should have used this bass...

...as the non-pickguard example as it has the same headstock.

It was late and I just posted the first one that I came to on my photobucket page. :?

Ah yes, forgot about those. I need one of them too! Maybe this weekend in Philly!

I saw one once that matched the finish on my "Blueburst" but the "offset" headstock was as warped as a hockey stick! :(
I have to wonder if a lot of them did that.

That flamed maple Pilot is a beauty! That red one may be the one. Is it #19? Mine is 34. I don't like that it doesn't have the top contour too. Almost like a slab body except it has the belly cut on back. It also has a strange shaped neck plate. It sort of slopes out from the top. It is hard to see in the photo. If anyone knows where I can find some screws for the pickguard or an extra knob let me know.

I did sell it and the guy I bought it from bought it back which I am glad about. I recently picked up a '76 Series 1 Alembic bass and had to sell a few things to make room (financially!) for it.
