I'm venting and following human nature by telling more people about my bad experiences than my good ones. The closest this has to Guild content is that people who play Guilds often buy recorded music, sheet music or books, especially The Guild Guitar Book by (our own) Hans Moust.

There are a lot of retail establishments out there that will let you order or reserve an item online and pick it up at a local bricks and mortar outlet of theirs. It is often a good way to save on shipping cost or time or just avoid worrying about a package sitting unattended on the doorstep.

I wanted a particular book for work. I was going to try and get it at Barnes & Noble because I wanted it "soon" and there were some unused B&N gift cards in the house. I checked inventory and went to one location. Turns out they sold the last copy between when I checked the inventory and when I arrived. I figured I would just go online and reserve a copy at a different location. I did so and the web site noted the price of $29.99 in just about that font size. I got my email confirmation, went to the store to pick it up and was greeted with "that will be $49.99 plus tax, please". Needless to say, I was not happy and was given some comments about company policy and price differences between stores and web sites. I looked at the email confirmation and it turned out that it did say $49.99 in almost that font size so all the mistakes were mine.

So, if anyone asks me where to buy Hans Moust's book B&N is not going to be my first suggestion. So I don't do the same stupid thing again, when dealing with a web site and local pickup I am going to make sure my transaction is for local pickup at the web site price and not local pickup at the store price.

I'll bet if I stick "Barnes and Noble SUCKS" in this post their web crawlers might pick it up. If so I say to them, please make it clear that I am only reserving something at a store, at the store price, and not ordering it at the web price. Perhaps don't even show me a price if I ask for local pickup?

Ooh, ooh, ooh. That gives me an opening for some crass commercialism. If you're buying on line from, oh I don't know, that other store that starts with A and ends with mazon, go to http://greyhoundoptions.org/ and click through the link towards the bottom of the page. We get a very nice check in the mail each quarter as a kick back. Thank you for your support. Every click is appreciated. :)

Yeah, that sucks. Any more, when I shop around online I'm also looking for free shipping to my house, and there are a lot of online retailers offering it. Got free shipping to my house on probably the last ten things I've bought online and I haven't paid a premium for it either. They're hungry for our $, too bad about B & N.

I clicked on your link, greihund. Looks like a good bunch of folks with nice dogs. My daughter belongs to a Boston Terrier rescue group, she has two of them. (She dressed them both up as monkeys from The Wizard of Oz last Halloween. Very amusing  )

I won't tell my wife cause she thinks dressing dogs in costumes is "undignified". Best one I ever saw was a French Bull Dog dressed like a Chippendale Dancer. Laughed so hard I almost cried. Magic Mike 8 inches high.

 Mrs. West and I frequent Books a Million, but just to check the books out. If we want to buy one, we almost always buy it at BAM online.......unless it's on sale there at the store. BAM is the same way, always has been.

Following my usual variant on the philosphy of one of my favorite moderators, I'm gonna stick up for Barnes and Noble AND your gripe...
I've seen that scenario now in a number of websites. Walgreen's comes to mind. In their case the disclaimer's pretty easy to find however. In the case you cite it appears to border on violating California's false advertising law which has a specific reference to the size of disclaimers being in the same size as the "special price" offer.
So even though California law may not apply to an internet merchant, it still demonstrates that at least one state's lawmakers deemed that "font size" was quite relevant in the definition of deceptive advertising.
In sympathy with Barnes & Nobel I'll point out that the whole "paper and ink hard copy" industry is in decline, fighting for its life, literally, and Branes and Nobel are in "double-jeopardy" since they are also competing with internet based sources which have no retail overhead, and that's why they offer an "online price" vs an "already in store stock price".
Because of recent posts you made about a merchant's reasons for stocking used instruments I'm sure you're aware of what goes into the cost of retail overhead, so the observation is more for the benefit of members who may not be aware of such issues.
