I am one of the biggest Tom Petty fans there is...I was delighted when another fan told me that Tom had brought out his old Guild for this tour...perhaps a 70s D25 12, perhaps for one of two newly reworked songs he does on acoustic. I'm guessing Dogs On The Run, or Two Gunslingers... But I'm leaning toward the former. Hoping he brings it out during my show on the 23rd! :love-struck:

Nice! I have a D-25 12 that hasn't gotten much playtime lately. You've just set my afternoon agenda for me!

^^Glad I could help! I just found out that he's probably using it on Into the Great Wide Open, so that should be fun! Hope you're playing a Heartbreakers song (at least one)!

Hans had sad about Tom Petty's 12 string (I hope it's that guitar) here:

"As far as I know Tom Petty is (and has been) using a D-212 with a tinted top for the longest time. Basically, it's the 12-string version of the D-25. The tinted top is a chocolate brown type of color, which might make it look like mahogany, but it is a spruce top."
and
"That particular guitar is a D-212. The D-212 model designation was changed during 1987 when it became the D-25-12."

Looks like another LR Baggs soundhole pickup sighting as well. It seems to be pretty popular.

Glad I came back here to check... the last Tom Petty gear inventory I found (2010) lists him owning a 70s D25 12, but another fan insists this one is the D212, early to mid '80s... Is there any way to tell which indeed this one is? Here's a front view of the same guitar used recently. The site I got this from assures that it's the D25 12. I'd love to be able to settle this dispute!

There was no D-25-12 in the 70ies...and there was no D-212 in the 70's either. (there was a G-212 but not with mahogany colored top I think).
So the one on the pictures cannot be a 70's guitar at all I'd say.

As Hans wrote (above link), the D-25-12 was introduced 1987, before that it was called D-212. I found a D-212M (for mahogany color) in the 5/1/1986 pricelist but don't know when that model actually was introduced. The (often incorrect) serial number list on the Guild webpage shows the D-212 introduced in 1981. The 1/15/87 pricelist shows the D-25-12 already.
So my guess would be that the one on the picture is a D-212 from the 1981 to 1986 range. Without knowing the serial number it might be hard to limit that date range further.
I hope that Hans can update us on this Tom Petty guitar if he has any more detailed info in the meantime (I mean since his above post from year 2005).

Makes my head spin, the model name changes and when they happened! I trust The Man, Mr. Moust, for sure! :peach:

As far as I know, the only difference between the D212 and the D25-12 is that the D212 had the Chesterfield on the headstock, and the D25-12 didn't. Here's my old '96 D25-12, now living with a friend. A really great guitar it was/is, too. best bang for the buck 12 string money can buy IMO

Hello murphala,

To the best of my knowledge, Tom Petty used to have a D-212M, which very well may be the one in the first photo.

The guitar in the second photo is not the same guitar. That looks like a D-25-12 from some time around 1987.

That's what I can tell you after looking at those two photos.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

To me? Looks like the same scratches in the same place on the lower bout in both pictures. Makes me believe they are the same guitar.

The rosette is definitely different. The bridge coloration is different. The fretboard color looks different. It's tough to look at such things under colored stage light. Let me see if I find other/better pictures of both.

Hey doc,

Better look at the specs. Much more precise than looking at scratches!

Don't like to use other people's photos without their permission, but I have a feeling that I can get away with this!

O.k., here are more pictures I found, I also noticed a different style pickguard between the two. Now to summarize what my understanding is:

Guitar #1: Seems to be a D-212M (mahogany colored spruce top) from the 1981 to 1986 date range.
Light colored bridge, rosette with lacquer over it (?) hence hardly visible, Gotoh closed tuners (?)

This shows probably guitar #1 without the LR Baggs:

Guitar #2: Seems to be a D-25-12 (mahogany colored spruce top) from some time around 1987.
Bridge half dark, half light color. Rosette clearly visible. Different style pickguard (watch area towards bridge). Larger chip or dark spot at the tail end if you imagine to follow the low e string line down to the lower bout. Different tuner buttons.

Guitar #3:
Now in the Hard Rock Café in Roma, I can't read the large badge but the picture said: "Tom Petty's on-stage 12 String from 1998-2003".
Obviously a sunburst version. Note the much larger rosette.
