What is it exactly???

It's a type of elevator called a Paternoster. Each side moves continuously and you get on as it goes by. It doesn't stop. They just move very slowly.

Edit. I have no idea why I knew this. I feel like I've seen one somewhere and I recognized it immediately, but I did have to look up the name.

OK last one. :)

Here's one from Tom Scott who generally has great vids:

Neat. Never heard of it before. And, as a kid in Manhattan I used to ride elevators everywhere my folks took me. I was curiously fascinated with them.

I wonder if there were ever any of these in higher than 20 story buildings?

Only one I know of is located in our Parlament House in Helsinki - and yes - there has been this centennials long question - does it turn upside down - or vice versa - at the endpoint 😂

So, did you watch the video that GAD posted, Timo? Apparently it stays upright, but rolls over some large gear.... Very cool. No upside down moments. That probably would've precluded the whole idea from every being considered.

Oh yes - I've nown for decades that they stay upright - but the story of them turning upside down ( btw - why is it not downside up ? ) is still strong and kicking lively - propably while majority - including me - has never seen or experienced one. 😁
