I came home from Costco with my new hearing aids yesterday. Boy the world is a brighter sounding place now. I have a playing music channel that works exceptionally well for playing guitar, except for my D 35, which is too bright. They say there is an adjustment period so I'll be patient. I may have to get them to tailor a channel just for the D 35. If you are old, get tested. You may be missing a lot. I have to tell my wife not to yell at me . LOL

The great thing about modern hearing aids is the software that runs them on your phone. You can dial in your environment types, such as "Noisy Restaurant" and other such settings that help you to tailor what they amplify and what they filter out. It's fairly cool! Don has had them until he lost one.... now he needs new ones.

My wife got some of those Costco hearing aids a year or so ago. She really likes them after she got used to them. She does tell me to turn the stereo down more often lol

But with hearing aids “I’m sorry I didn’t hear you” goes right out the window. Being partially (selectively) deaf does have its advantages you know.
Hearing aids cannot help those who don't listen and don't want to hear. I've found this to be irritatingly true!!

I've given up my selectively deaf hearing profile for the last six years.

Oh, and I was divorced six years ago.

Congratulations, Br1ck! You will probably now be purchasing new strings more frequently.

Too True, Tom. Technology takes us far, but only so far...

2000 years ago: "You have eyes and do not see and you have ears and you do not hear, neither do you remember."

Modernized: “You have corrective, progressive, blue light blocking lenses, and you still don’t see. You have ‘hear the pin drop' amplified hearing aids with EQ and 3D spatial sound, and you still don’t hear. Oh, and your memory is slipping, as well."

{horribly loose translation of Mark 8:18}

My brother gets his hearing aids from Costco also, and likes them a lot. He toured as an LD and other such things with a lot of big name bands in the ‘80’s and 90’s. His hearing is quite shot.

My hearing aids do have basic EQ on the app, but the techs can adjust 17 or so frequencies, so I have no doubt I can get them dialed in. I'm taking my guitar into my next appointment. I did roll some highs off when I played my Santa Cruz, but the Guild D 35 is still too bright. I have every expectation of them being dialed in.

Yes there is a difference between hearing and listening. I'm having to tell the other half not to talk so loud quite often, and this morning I realized I was not hearing the higher pitched frequency of a mockingbird. And inside the house there is the jangling of dog tags to get used to. We are going to visit my grandson's birthday party today, so some of the party/restaurant settings will get a workout. Still very much in the adjust the brain period. You do need to realize you hear everything whether you want to or not. Babbling fountain is good, squeaking screen door is not, but I have oil.

👂WHAT?👂 I wish that I needed hearing aids so I could remove them a night ......maybe I'd sleep better. My wife removes hers and then she can't hear herself snore. My hearing is too sensitive I can hear a mouse fart in the next room. I do have hearing issues but it's when I'm in a crowded noisy environment all I hear is the ambient noise not voices of people talking to me.
I'm actually considering noise canceling ear buds to see if they help me sleep. Earplugs donot block enough sound. Whaaaa Whaaa whaaa!

I also play the piano professionally. I have two big grands in my studio. When practicing, I find it helpful to remove the hearing aids. They tend to distort the highs. And my hearing aids are considered to be the good ones.

There is a belief that the Steinway men, in the late 19 Century as they were perfecting the modern piano, pushed the sonic output of the instrument because they were losing their hearing. They smoked, drank and did target shooting. So now we have the modern Steinway!

Foam earplugs are your friends. :)

Have you played a Bösendorfer, @Dr Jazz ??? I played a full-sized one in a concert hall once many years ago and it was a life-changing moment for me. Kind of like when I pulled down the Guild F-512 off the wall and spent a few minutes alone with it.

Steinways are absolutely wonderful though. And I love that neat story. Might indeed be true!
