Ray, it's awfully hard to see anything clearly with this recording (videotape, low rez).... I don't think JD did anything strange with his finger picks, but I don't know for certain.
Try watching his finger picking hand . I know vids are so so but dang it looks as his knuckles are curled .

Charlie, you *know* it's the guitar, right! You purchase, repair, rebuild, etc the right Guild guitar and it makes any player and any song sound great...

;)
Hi Christoper hope your well . I enjoyed our time together but not gotten a reply from you there after . I know what you told me so I’m more or less just poking the bear ! lol 😂

Hi Ray! I loved our time together, and I look forward to doing it again! How are you fairing?

RE: John Denver... He preferred the "National" style fingerpick, the metal or plastic blades that curve up over the fingertip.

When he first starts that song (Bells of Rhymney) he is fingerpicking "Travis" style (only the fingers move, wrist is fixed). But as the song progresses you see him using something of a mixed "Clawhammer" ("banjo") style where he is using a lot of wrist and elbow, especially as the tempo increases.

I have lots of fingerpicks, all different makes and styles. Come on by and you can try 'em out for yourself. I used to perform Bells of Rhymney frequently (just to show off - LOL, just kidding) so we can even try the picks on the same song JD was playing!

I play For Emily, Hazy Shade of Winter, Walk Right In, Walking in the Country, Castles in the Air, lots os Lightfoot tunes, etc. Many of Paul Simon's early tunes were performed with just Paul and Art and a 12-string. I believe Paul was busking around Europe with just himself and a 12 when Sounds of Silence was augmented and hit the big time.

I recently customized a 1999 Guild JF65-12 (the artist formerly known as the F-412) for a customer. It came out so luscious that I re-recorded one of my own instrumentals on it as a testament to what a Guild 12 string has the potential to sound like...

Holy cow, Chris. That thing sounds amazing.
Your playing is exceptionally good. Makes me feel better about selling you my F212, I know it's in good hands.(y)

Wow! I think my F-412 has an inferiority complex now. ;)

It sounds great, doesn't it? It retains all the classic "shimmer" of the standard maple jumbo, but I was able to coax so much more bass response out of the new top. It rumbles!

Your F-212 is still "in progress"... I am very hopeful for how it will turn out.
