So I’m in Woodstock New York. Saw this today. Not terrible. But expensive. 2500 seems steep no? Dave

It's more than I'd pay, but the prices people have been getting for vintage Guilds seems to have really gone up in the past few years, so I don't know what's reasonable anymore.

It looks in good shape. If it needs no work and you love it, you might try haggling.

Much better deal right here in our own FS section! Plus you won’t find a better person to buy from than mavuser.

It seems like they are charging a premium because it's in Woodstock. But as a point of comparison, you can buy a brand new Martin 15 series which is a rough equivalent to this one for $1,500 including hard case and lifetime warranty. A brand new Guild M-20 with case is about $2,000. It's not a straight up comparison because the model you are looking at is a vintage guitar, but I don't know if the sound or other intangible qualities will be appreciably different. Just throwing out a few options to consider.

What else have they got in that shop???

thanks for the endorsement, all. I actually have the 1964 M-20 for sale as well as a 62 M-20 I would ultimately part with as well, both restored by Jacobs. and I am not so far from Woodstock, and head up in that direction every so often (was halfway there yesterday- doh!)

just a heads up on the OP, not sure how the shop arrived at 1965 for that M-20, as it looks to be from the year 1970. also the sloppy "SS" on the label means it is a cosmetic factory second.

also this guitar was built in Westerly...the two I have for sale were built in Hoboken

Hard to tell from the photos, but the saddle looks super low. The one from above is difficult to judge and the other one your hand is in the way. Also, those ramps were put in to increase the break angle of the strings over a super low bridge saddle. If it's due for a neck reset soon (which you'd know since you've had it in your hands) then that price is super high. As has been said, there are other (better) examples for sale here. I love those little, all-hog Guilds. What a cool guitar!!

Equating brand new with mid 60s is missing the whole point. One needs to go play some 50+ year old guitars.

So it's the age that's driving the price, not the model, or the location of the shop. Thank you for clarifying. :) FWIW I did mention that it was not an equal comparison of new to that one because it's a vintage... but no worries. It's the age that's driving the price. That's what I needed to understand.

Age and delusional thinking. As has been said, if it needs a neck reset or any significant work, it's way overpriced. But vintage guitars (varying by builder) usually collect a premium price. Sometimes.

But Nick Drake.
I admit, I had to Google. And I see he had one of these guitars, or so the urban legend has it. Interesting story; reminds me a bit of Searching for Sugarman in that he was unknown while he was alive. Sugarman was believed to be dead, then found alive, and finally got the recognition he deserved.

It all comes down to taste but Sugarman is good. Nick Drake is in Joni Mitchell’s league.

You’d think sellers might mention Eric Clapton in their ads for the M20. That, at least, would be accurate, as that’s who the guitar in that photo originally belonged to.

Clapton gave it to the photographer who shot the Drake LP cover, and the photographer loaned it to Drake as a prop for the photo shoot, since Drake had arrived without his guitar.

(Never seen a photo of Clapton with the guitar though — maybe that’s the rub?)
