When I checked the forum the other day, I was struck by the fact that near the top were threads for the 1968 D40 and the 1969 D40, and over in the Buy/Sell/Trade subform was a thread for a 1964 D40. Well, I thought, I can help fill in the gaps.
Here is my 1966 D40, which Sandy kindly sold to me after he bought his Oxnard D40 Traditional. The guitar has an interesting appearance: it has few scratches, dings, or other superficial flaws, but the finish has lost all its gloss. What finish there is is matte and very thin. The guitar is very well balanced and has a warm, woody tone; it works very nicely with my voice. In newer guitars I prefer rosewood to mahogany, but old mahogany can be wonderful, as my Hoboken guitars show.

Anyone have a '63, '65, or '67, so we can complete the set?

I miss my old guitar, but I know it's in good hands.

Sandy, the D40 has been getting a lot of exercise recently, as I'v been using it to accompany the singing part of my vocal rehabilitation exercises. My voice varies wildly from day to day, but the D40 always sounds terrific (as much as my playing will allow, at any rate).

Not the best photo possible, but the '65 D-40 I bought off the wall in '67. The original bridge here has been altered for a new drop-in saddle and the pin holes replaced (there was a crack running through most of them) with a redrilled ebony insert. Since then (2010), the neck has been reset (a second time) and the bridge has been replaced by a very good reproduction (made by Marty Reynolds). Otherwise, it's pretty much as I bought it, aside from the Pearse armrest and Baggs Dual Source pickup, and some overspray on the neck.
