I've recently acquired my first guild guitar. It's a 1978 Guild D40NT.

It's got a few bumps and scrapes but it's an excellent player and the sound is as balanced and clear as any acoustic I've played.

Does anyone know if Guild used Brazilian or Indian rosewood? Also the back is very dark brown so it's hard to tell if it's a single piece or a laminate.

Congrats on the acquisition. My 1980 D40SB-Ant has a solid mahogany two-piece back, as should yours. Not one piece. Laminates are used for arched backs, like a D25. Yep, balanced and clear. The D50s in the 80s would be East Indian not Brazilian rosewood. Dave

The back and sides are mahogany. I thought it was rosewood because it's so dark - and the person I got it from said it was rosewood. Does Guild put a stain on the mahogany?

Hi Moby,

I think Guild used a cherry stain on some of their models which makes the mahoghany look darker than it is. BTW you might get more action on your query if it were in the acoustic/ acoustic electric section, cos a lot of those guy's dont visit here too often....

Cheers, Ian
