Hey guys I just joined. I was wondering if I could get some help on my guild D-40. I was wondering what kind of Spruce would be in that year, I've heard Adirondack and Sitka so I was hoping if people here knew. I also was under the impression that in 1980 it was a "reissue" that year and not a normal model. The neck is very thick like a 60s D-40 which I have played. It's currently at a luthier being restored and getting some tlc as it was in storage for 9 years. I recently started playing again and picked up a Taylor GA8 as I always struggled with the neck size on the Guild. I was thinking of trading it or selling it (I want to get an electric too) and was wondering what the value would be. I probably won't though as I've had it so long (since 94) and always planned on passing it down or what not. Still, I feel guilty that a guitar with such great tone and what not just not being used...

Any help would be great! When I get it back this week I can post the serial if that helps...

bags,

First of all, welcome to the forum.
I can't help with the wood question but I know that someone here will chime in with an answer for you.
As far as the neck goes, is it too thick or too thin for you? I've had success working on the neck of a couple of my guitars and I feel confident in making one thinner but couldn't begin to make one thicker!

*A D40 is on my wish list so let us all know if this one has possibility.

Cheers,
Joe

I figured it was Sitka. Thanks!

The neck is too thick for me. I am considering trading it or selling it not sure yet. it has a lot of sentimental value to me and an amazing tone.

Hi bags, I love the chunky necks on the D40's and find them comfortable and fun to play, but can see how others might not. If you're not playing it, there's guys here that would love to... Here's book value...

Grading

Excellent Average
$1,250 - 1,500 $800 - 1,000

My Epiphone had the same problem with the traditional ' deep vee' neck. I liked it enough to take it to my luthier buddy for a consult. We figured that the neck could possibly be planed/sanded down.... but he wouldn't touch it.
So I took it to my shop and did the work myself. Belt sander did the trick and after staining/finishing, it feels great. Saved a few bucks in the process, too.

Of course, it's an Epiphone (not that there's anything wrong with that)--might not try it with a Guild, but then there's the sweet smell of success still lingering.

BTW it states on the sticker D40 NT. I for the NT does that make a difference?

NT is the abbreviation for "natural top," as opposed to sunburst.
