Per a PM I received from a new member (matsker)...

"was getting involved with this bidding..but my concern is not seeing it in
person..the ebay purchases are new to me..was going to post and ask
opinions about buying on ebay...check out that 1980 x500 the bid is up to a
1000 now..go for it..i will stay away cause of my fear of buying without
holding and playing in person...the bridge has been changed"

In my opinion that guitar will go much higher than $1000, especially since there is more than 4 days remaining in the auction. I recently purchased a 1984 X-500 from Redbone Guitars in San Antonio, Texas based on photos that had been posted on GBASE.com. While the description was deceptive and certain issues weren't mentioned, I paid $1999 for the guitar and had to put about $200 into it. It will need a neck reset at some point, but for now it plays nicely and sounds good, and should continue to for at least a few more years. It is not a guitar I ever plan to sell, so a neck reset is something that I would likely have to do eventually, and they are commonly needed after about 30 or more years anyway. As for the guitar on Ebay, it looks very nice and if I'm not mistaken it is being sold by our one and only MrBoZiffer, or so the photo album of the guitar seems to imply. Personally, I would have no issues bidding on that guitar, but you have to determine how much you are willing to pay. As for the bridge, I wouldn't worry too much about that as you should be able to buy a replacement bridge, or even have one made for you at a nominal cost. Hans may even be able to help you out in locating the proper bridge as he was able to send me a matching bridge pickup ring for mine to replace the broken ring that came with the guitar.

Maybe some others out here can add their two cents, and maybe even MrBoZiffer himself...tell us about your guitar MBZ!

Good luck!

Welcome to LTG!

While X-500's are probably worth $3000 I would not pay that much as you can probably get an X-700 for that price, which could be why it has been for sale for so long. For a '79 in mint condition I would be willing to pay around $2400, but that's just me. As for Gretsch, I'm not sure it is quite the same sound as the Guild X-500, but very nice in its own right. Maybe some others will weigh in on this.

Good luck!
