I'm starting a new project and found while stripping the paint that it looks like the original paint was white. Any ideas? White might be a cool refin color.

The S-50 was my first electric guitar back in the day. I only thought the colors were Red or Sunburst. Mine had a single chrome "soap bar" pickup with black pickguard and the assymentric head with a simple black headstock that said Guild. It also had the Hagstrom trem, a plus at the time as Hendrix released "Are You Experianced".

Over the years I have found that the early "soap bar' pickups came with a white plastic top instead of chrome and some S-50's came with a "tortose like" pickguard.

However I never saw colors other than the two I mentioned above.

It looks like a good bit of cherry under there, but I can't tell if it's on top of or under the white.

Whenever I removed the pickguard of a 60's S50, S100 or S200 the electronics cavity always had some overspray of the origional finish.
I don't see any white in the routing so it was either the cherry red or a burst.

Yeah, I've never seen one in white either. The reason I asked was because all the red is over white and before I scraped the paint out of the control cavity it was white on the bottom, also has ONLY white overspray in the truss rod nut cavity. I also thought that maybe they used white as a base coat although none of the other S guitars I've repaired or owned had any signs of white. Just curious you know. I think white would be a great color since I need to repaint anyway.
Thanks for all the input folks as always. You peeps have always been a fun bunch to deal with.

My former '65 S-50 was refinished in black, but I saw some cherry peaking through a couple of knicks in the body. My '64 S-100 Polara originally was cherry (confirmed by Hans) but was refinished in natural before I bought it.

Grot's is a beautiful sunburst, part of his trifecta of 60s 'burst solidbody Guild goodness.
