I just saw this on Ebay. The label apparently reads A-50, but the electronics look like they were installed at the Hoboken factory. Thoughts?

Hello nmiller,

It looks to me that this guitar started life as an A-50. Keep in mind that the A-50 and the X-50 shared the same superstructure; the A-50 was the only acoustic archtop with a laminated maple top.
It is very well possible that at some point it was decided to convert one of the unsold A-50s to an X-50, which would not be unusual at Guild. If it had been done around the same time that the superstructure was made, the pickup would have been the metal covered soapbar. The pickups that are on this guitar were introduced about 2 years after the superstructure was made and the fact that it has 2 of them, makes it somewhat unusual since the X-50 would normally be a one-pickup guitar.

Anyway, all the parts look like they are factory stock parts and the EIA-code on the pots might give us an indication when the conversion was done. The only thing that's weird is the fact that they didn't change the label. The usual policy at Guild was that in a conversion case like this, the instrument would get the 'X-50 Special' designation ( or something like that) written on the label.

If it was done at Guild I wouldn't call it a one-of-a-kind Guild though. It's more like a variation on an existing model.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust
