My progression went like this.
First I was nervous and played poorly
Then I wasn't nervous anymore and played poorly- my fingers didn't get the message I guess.
Then my fingers started to work too.
Then I took second place in the local Banjo contest. Probably never happen again-
.
WOW! thats a huge congrats! making it like that in any competition is huge!

ive noticed that people applaud when i leave the stage--thats something i suppose.

You should consider opening with an upbeat, easy-to-play song that you know the crowd will love. That will loosen you up and reduce your anxiety level for the next song(s).

Buddy Holly comes to mind here. Something like "That'll Be the Day", "Rave On", "Oh Boy", "Rock Around with Ollie Vee" will work great!

I've yet to play to my first audience where anyone didn't dig Buddy covers.

@wontox - That was very funny and well told. Luckily when I was laughing out loud there was no one here to ask me why, so I did not have to admit my sense of humor is still rooted somewhere in the 6th grade.

@jgwoods
I'm reminded of all the authorized and unauthorized versions of Monopoly that replace the flavor text with something appropriate to the theme of the version. I can imagine a music themed Community Chest card that says "You have won second prize in a banjo contest. Collect $11" which is probably $11 more than your prize money.

Thanks to all who had the dignity not to respond with puerile, frat-boy humor to this poigniant, sensitive telling of a traumatic event in the life of a young aspiring performer.Wontoxy
I'm sorry Wontoxy, but if you've come here seeking dignity you have been seriously misled.
ps - We did a few shows at an Assisted Living facility last summer and "visualizing your audience naked" was NOT an option.

...I don't really have the drive to perform. It is not what interests me. I like playing with others and getting in the groove, don't care if I ever get a solo.
If I can play well enough to contribute them I am happy.

That's pretty much how I feel anymore.
I still gig, but I've had a bellyful of it and only stay in it for the social aspects of playing with friends.

I'm pretty happy at home on my couch with my D40 and a bottle of diet green tea anymore.
the show for me is now the beautiful (Guild) guitar sound, when my fingers go to the right places.

When I do get a call to play out I love to stay in the backline with the rhythm chores. I've said everything I ever wanted to state in a solo a buzzilion times (not bad for only six licks).

Tonight (Saturday) I have a jazz gig up the coast in a lil' ol' cafe, with friends. I'll take a few solos no doubt, but I get just as much music thought across playing chords in the background. It's just as satisfying to me now.

Hey, Aloha Joe, if I had any dignity in the first place, I wouldn't have shared THAT story with a bunch of strangers.

Wontox, and,

Thanks, Frono, for LOL (first time I've used that abr.) . I probably couldn't find much to like in a person who can't stay in touch with their sixth-grade side.
