I thought I had enough guitars, but sometimes things just happen. About a year ago a dear friend and bandmate passed away. He also liked Guilds so even though I never got to see it (he was the steel player in our Hawaiian band), he often spoke lovingly of a Starfire II he bought for his first successful band back in 1965, Fat Jack. A few of you know who I'm talking about. His bandmate got the Starfire III. They both liked the color they had, but my friend wanted the 'Guildsby' and the other guy didn't so they swapped tailpieces. Anyway, to make a long story short, he left behind a number of nice instruments, which his wife is now ready to part with, including the Guild.

My friend worked as a musician all his life, supplementing his income doing instrument repair at a music store, so some years ago when he ran across a set of neck inlays for a vintage Epiphone DeLuxe he used them on his Starfire. He also replaced the tuners with Schallers, but left the rest of it alone. He LOVED the pickups in that guitar!

I went over to her house the other night for a look. The case was battered and looked like somebody left it in the Grizzly cage at the zoo for a week. Taking the guitar out of the case and holding it in my hands was a very emotional experience. I'm sure he was the last one to touch it. His wife said "take it home... if you decide to buy it we'll make it work".

I cleaned it, I polished it and I played it... a lot!

The neck is wonderful. It's the perfect analog to my '65 D-50, the guitar that taught me how to play. I know now why he loved these pickups... they have a sweetness and a 'bloom' that is remarkable. This guitar will make me a better player, in part because I can't put it down. Sorry for such a long post, but the guitar and the story are inseparable.

I sent some pics to Hans, who verified it as a 1964 Emerald Star.

Beautiful guitar and beautiful story. You are extremely lucky to have this tangible reminder of your dear friend. He must be smiling... :)

very cool.

Those cloud inlays make a lot of visual sense on a Guild of that era, the top of the design matches the shape of the top of the headstock. And I like the old green Guilds.

I always enjoy knowing at least the name and style of music played by the previous owner of my gear, whenever possible. Sometimes they come with nametags or initials on the cases or amp covers, I leave those on. And I have a special box for old picks or capos that came in the case or inside amps. Old music store stickers are cool too.

It's provenance and it makes you feel connected to a tradition where some other guy maybe around your same age at that time looked at various guitars or amps and decided on that particular one; usually, for the stuff I have, a modest priced, not overly ostentatious piece, made not that far from where it was purchased, for a guy that probably only had one or two guitars and wasn't professional but could play a bit and took care of what he had. I like everything about that.

Your story is kind of like chinese food.
But instead of "sweet and sour" it's "sad and happy".
Or "Happy Sad"....the late great Tim Buckley. Tried to find a vid to link, but that one isn't there. Not a Starfire player, but a Guild 12'er icon. The tune would work so wonderfully here.
Thanks Joe, I know how I'd feel if my best buddy's wife tried to make sure I got his JF3012....you actually made my eye leak one of those wet salty things. 8)

I like this story. I have a sentimental Starfire ('65) as well. I love the pups. I wonder the difference between the Wood bridge you have and the Aluminum bridge on mine. My case looks like it's been loved on too...haha

I love the Emerald finish.

Enjoy it.

Thank you all for the great comments. The fact that he did the inlays himself makes it all the more special.

The condition of that green finish is the finest I've seen. Why would this one not fade the way most others do?

I think when he wasn't playing it, it was in the case. He really took good care of his instruments. The case looks like it took plenty of abuse but did its job well.

What was he putting on it in the way of cleaning, polishing, protecting, etc?
That's a great question Darryl, I wish I knew. I'll ask the owner of the music store where he did repairs... he might know.
