Starting April 15th, ebay is matching the "final value fees" that it charges for auction style listings with the fees that it charges for Buy it now auctions.

It used to be that if you sold a guitar for $1500 listing with the buy it now feature, you would be charge roughly $70 for the auction after the item sold, but if you listed it as a regular auction you would be charged 9% as the "final value fee." or $135 (roughly). This was a great encouragement for sellers to list using the buy-it-now feature.

Starting April 15, the fee for a regular auction is raising from 9% to 10% and the fees for a buy it now auction is skyrocketing to the same 10%. That means that what used to cost $70 is now going to cost $150. (Again, I'm using rough numbers here).

So whether you are a buyer or a seller, you're about to see a big hike in the prices to sell a guitar or other similarly priced equipment.

That sucks. You would think they would realize that they can do just as well with increasing the quantity of items sold on eBay, with lower fees. I assume they know what their best business model is, but this will make me think twice about using them, depending on the item I might be selling. The only good thing is that there appears to be no plans to reinstate the fees they used to have just to list an item - I do like it that there is no charge unless your item sells.

Another reason to support your local music store's consignment sales, I guess. Or as most of us do, keep offering guitars on LTG first!

I've noticed a big increase in CL ( called Gumtree over here ) recently .
Also , forums-selling , for their members . I've done a few COD's on "pulled Ebay" items
in the last 6 months too , and we've split the savings on some "$2-3k article" transactions.
Couple Ebay with Paypal and why would you need to print money to make a fortune when
there's this invention !

A lot of the cheeky stores want upto a third of the selling price over here . Even a quarter
is easy money for no outlay .

Consignment doent work for me, 25-30% commission is just to much to eat.

The eBay fees are crazy. It's harder to sell big ticket items on craigslist but if you're not in a hurry it can work out better for buyers and sellers both. But I wish someone would come along and really give eBay some competition. Google, Yahoo, Amazon …?
