Greetings! I found this board while searching for Luthiers in Westchester. While the guitar I am looking to have luthiered is not a Guild, I do happen to have a D25 that I purchased new somewhere in the 80's that also needs work. So here I am. My D25 has the following stamped into the back of the headstock:

D250985
Made in USA
10-87

To be honest, I don't exactly remember the date that it was purchased, but I assume that 10-87 refers to the month & year that it was completed.

I was also wondering if it was common for Guild to use Brazilian rosewood for the fretboard back then. Mine has that swirly grain and color pattern that is characteristic of Brazilian.

Regards,
Kevin

Ola! Kevin and welcome to LTG. D25's are well regarded hereabouts. I'd be surprised if a Guild D25 from the late eighties had a Brazilian RW fingerboard, but anything is possible.

Not sure about the 10-87 stamp. I've seen that on a lot of Guilds, so I wouldn't necessarily conclude that's when it was built.

There are others here with a lot more knowledge than I. They'll be along shortly to answer your questions.

Hello Mica,

Welcome! Your guitar was manufactured at the very end of 1987. The 10-'87 date on the back of the headstock is the date the serial number was stamped in there. That was before the instrument was finished ( as in lacquered) in the finishing dept. Typically, a Guild was completed a couple of months after that.

I was also wondering if it was common for Guild to use Brazilian rosewood for the fretboard back then. Mine has that swirly grain and color pattern that is characteristic of Brazilian.

Guild used Brazilian rosewood fingerboards and bridges into the '80s. I would say that 1987 would be a little late though. Show us a detail photo!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Welcome!

You have a great guitar that'll be sure to please once it's put into good shape.
I have a D-25 stamped 05-87.

I took a photo of the fretboard to show the grain pattern, but don't know how to post the picture. Can someone help out with that?

Welcome Mica!
It does look like it could very well be Braz rosewood to me... Actually, I would bet it is, and if it's not, it's gorgeous anyway!
Now that you got the pic posting thing down, show us the rest!!!!

Yeah, I'm certain its Brazilian. I've seen all types of rosewood & only Brazilian has that type of figure. Either way it does look good. Heres a full bodied shot:
