I was surfing Reverb and saw this one, and I guess it caught my eye because it was in Texas. I'm not interested and don't need a rosewood dread, but I've got two questions for anyone well versed in Martin acoustics. I notice they don't call this a D28, but from what I'm gathering from the ad, a "Model 28 or 28 Style"? Is that correct? So this is NOT a D28? Then if you read the seller's description, he mentions it is built in Mexico. Are they building Martin guitars in Mexico? Just curious.

I don't think a Martin custom shop guitar is made in Mexico, Jim. They got that wrong.

As for why they're not calling it a D28... I think they don't do that for custom shop builds. Your best bet for solid answers on this might come from some of the guys who've gotten custom shop builds here, but more likely on the UMGF board. I'm a member there and hang out in the 12-string cafe, but there's lots of participation in their "D28 lounge"...

IMO, it's the Adirondack spruce (especially), and the grain of the EIR that are responsible for this being a custom. Standard D28s have Sitka tops, I think.

I was just curious Charlie, no big deal. It is pretty. The "Mexico" part is what threw me. It's a 2-3 hour drive from here......I suppose if I were curious enough, I'd drive over. Just wondering.

Thanks Charlie,

West

If you're interested in a D28, Jim, I love the idea of an Adi top on one. It'd be worth the trip.
The one I still kick myself for not buying years ago was a Custom Shop D28 with all of this....Adi top, Adi forward shifted bracing. Fine guitar.

Time for a road trip, Jim!

By the way, do you like a satin neck? I do. But I just noticed that in the specs for this custom. FYI.

I have an HD28V. The H means it has the same herringbone purfling that you can see on the beauty you found and they both have the "Diamonds and Squares" fingerboard inlays and the forward shifted X-brace. The are part of the "Vintage series", hence the letter V. Mine does not have the Adirondack top nor the wild rosewood.

Anyway, it's an incredible D-28 and more!

Didn't somebody around here post a thread about guitar names and numbers? (Asking for a friend)

Gosh Charlie, I'm not sure. I'd just have to play it. Love the wild grain and all the Adirondack. Doesn't seem like a bad price though.

I'm actually going close by there next week, though I'm not driving and will be traveling a good bit south of there. Hunting out west next week.

It is a 2021 made guitar. One would need to contact Martin getting the correct model name for that serial number. Usually they respond fast.

 Martin too Ralf?:ROFLMAO: Thank you sir, but to be honest with you, I'm not that interested. I have curiosity more than real interest in that one. But I will say that it appears to be a pretty good price on a really cool guitar if someone were interested.

Martin player and collector here, and I love all three of mine! As to your question, "28" is just a number denoting the appointments on the guitar. Here's the explanation, straight from the source.

Ah! This is the one that said it was made in Mexico.

Most likely the seller goofed in the listing, but it would be important to confirm this. Nice looking top!
