Please enlighten me, how can you tell if it's spam? Are there some consistent clues?

This was spam, Cynthia. Apparently a new user used the personal messaging (conversations) to blat spam at our users. I was suspicious when I first got the PM myself, but then I saw the report above and I was sure. The awkwardness of the PM/post and the fact that it was a new user who had no reason to be sending an email address (without explanation) to me/you should be clues.

Again, in the future, if you get a weird PM or see weird thread behavior, just use the report button.

I wondered if it might be legit because Guildedagain happens to have a guitar for sale but if other members got the same message then I suppose that would be a clue.

Thank you for looking out for us!

That’s not spam - it’s a scam.

Anyone who tries to move a buy/sell conversation off the board to email is likely trying to scam you.

The tool we use to get rid of them is called “Spam Clean”, though.

You mods are better than I am! I have trouble differentiating between "weird thread behavior" and regular "LTG veers"!

I should have taken a more complete screenshot.

The title to the message was; 12 string electric

Possibly I had feelers out for one, but really a long time ago. This thing must be mining the way back machine, 2nd or 3rd tier scammers.

Only genuine Spam gets the Hormel brand:

Note the "Nabisco" brand on this package, it can't possibly be genuine Spam.

Indeed, the product was revealed as a fake shortly before introduction.
