I am looking for a backup guitar for my lovely 1985 F512. Thinking about having something that can do the job, but maybe with a little different flavor. I have been looking at F412s, as well as J-30-12s. But have not actually played any, yet. I thought I would utilize the knowledge on LTG to help me navigate the years of manufacture, nut width, and other considerations, like anything to avoid.

I play in a duo, 2 voices male/female, 2 guitars, guitar/uke, we single mic and the 512, fits in well. Curious if anyone has any relevant experience. I understand the different qualities of the Rosewood/Maple, and it would seem workable, or should I just look for another F512?

Very different animals in terms of sound. Rosewood is very rich with deep overtones. Maple sound is much more plain. It may actually be a better choice for live mic and recording. Can't help much with your other questions except to say that I think you will like any Guild 12er you find if it's in decent condition.

I have been looking at F412s, as well as J-30-12s.
Yes, you should get one of those! Highly recommended. There are a couple on reverb right now worth looking into, especially the 2010 F412. Ask lots of questions! Good luck!

There is a 1977 f512 I am looking at, as well. Any info about what that would feel like in comparison with my 1985 512?

I'd go for the F412. People seem to rave about them. Different sound, not just a duplicate of what you already have.
