Got this from Los Angeles (via my brother in NJ) in January. I wasn't really looking for a black S-100 but when Kent mentioned it had a pretty wide neck I knew I had to have it.
She is a little bit beat up in places, missing a few screws (like me) & it looks like it had a bit of fretboard binding repair work done. It's got some rock'n'roll character I guess. I love it!

Sound wise, the hype about S-100s is true. No frills, rock machine but can be used for the pretty stuff too due to the fabulous HB-1s. I was really surprised with the usefulness of the out of phase sounds. With both volumes up, middle posn engaged & phase switch down you get a bright (but not shrill) sound which is great for reggae-ish staccato rhythm stabs (think "Roxanne" by The Police or some reggae tinged Clash songs etc). Turn either volume knob down just a hair & the sound becomes fuller - their's a real wide variety in just this one position if you want to play with the Volume knobs. The other positions are all very useful & sound great. I especially love the bridge pickup & the ringing cleans when backing off the right hand & then the semi-overdriven tones when you dig in harder (going through a Vox clone).

The HB-1s do have more clarity & definition than standard PAF humbuckers. They also, to me have an attack which is sharper than most HBs & as a result this guitar sounds great going through a fuzz box which I usually reserve for single coil equipped guitars.

The neck is just about 1 11/16" wide, maybe just a hair less & frets are good.

Once again, thanks to Kent, he is a great guy to deal with. I am forever indebted to you for getting this to me.

I was waiting for the sun to start shining over here but that hasn't happened (worst summer EVER) & other issues stopped me from doing more pics & posting this NGD earlier, so here is what I got:

Talk about rubbing salt into my wounds :) I still kick myself a bit for not getting a 1976 black S-100 that got sold on Ebay a couple days ago for $1100. If it was finished in a different color I'd be all over her but still S-100 is beautiful in any color.

Congrats, mate!!!

As stated I wasn't too keen on black myself but it really suits the guitar when you see it in person. And I reckon the more beat up it gets the cooler it will look. Still, wouldn't mind a white one either. Or a green one, or a cherry one, or a...

Another thing with this guitar is that's it's very resonant. IT'S ALIVE!! :D 8)

Oh, man! You're killing me. That black one on ebay called out to me but it was a little too late. Well I guess better luck next time :)

Congrats Zelja! I know what you mean about black guitars. For some reason, black works on Guild.

Thanks for the review, Zelja!

I actually put in an offer of $1100 for the ebay 76. And they turned it down instantly.

A week or so later, they contacted me asking if I still wanted it for $1100, and if so, they wanted to do the deal off-site to save on fees. That didn't sit right with me, especially considering that they had a 95% feedback. Now I see they sold it - on ebay - for $1100 - my original offer. :x

Man, ebay is just a rough environment sometimes.

Well done Zelko!
I'm glad you like the effect of the phase switch - I've heard others say they never use it but I like it too - it really adds to the tonal choices.
Looks good in black. Are those Schaller tuners?

As I said I was quite surprised with the tones using the out of phase positions. good for songs where you are playing jangley or stabby rhythm parts in the verse by using the middle posn, out of phase & then switch over to the bridge for some power chords for the chorus.

The tuners are Guild branded - no clue as to the manufacturer.
