While looking for an old CD by Doug Geeting last night, I stumbled onto his MySpace page, and what should appear partway down but a duo with Bill Staines playing a big 'burst Guild.
Always thought he was a Martin guy. Too bad the mix sort of excludes Doug, but Bill Staines still sounds like Bill Staines, even with a Guild! Don't know how old this is...

What a discovery! Haven't seen or heard of Bill in a while and yes, he still sounds like....Bill Staines. My sister and I are big Bill Staines 'groupies' and my wife and I even share a few memories relating to his music.

I guess he's still on the road....somewhere. I'm happy to see that he found a good guitar.

Joe

*Think I'll go downstairs (wife's still sleeping) and run through a little bit of Roseville Fair.

In his "autobiography" Bill talks about his guitars... a Martin D-18 or D-28 (? I'll have to check tonight) for most of his gigs, but when he flies to Alaska/other spots, he plays a Guild D-50. We saw him in Oct in SLC, and he was playing his ancient Martin... starting to look a bit like Willie's. I commented on it in the last post in this thread...

I'm a big fan of Bill Stains.
He is as great a story teller, as he is a singer/song writter.
I wonder how long he will play the Guild?
Could the Martin be in for repairs?
Someone should ask him.

I got the impression from his book that the Guild was his "beater"... the guitar he took when he didn't want to risk the Martin. When he played SLC in Oct, he played the Martin. The Guild was nowhere in evidence. I didn't get chance to ask him about it, tho'...

Actually Joe there used to be a kids program back in the old days called "Captain Pugwash", and there was a character in that called Seaman Staines.

Hmmm, I wonder what message were they sending to those kids, however subliminally that is. :?

Well done Jerry !! I remember watching the show back when I was a little lad, never picked up on the double entendres of course. I seem to remember it was done with cutouts not cartoons as such ?

What - another Jerry

It was a mixture of cartoons but done on a cut out basis, and it is true there were no sexual double entendres. However, there are a few songs I do that have lines that can be embarrasing

Lovely on the water, "For our queen she do want seamen..."

Spancil Hill, "Til next I came to anchor..." (Say it quick  )

I saw Bill play last Saturday in Rowayton, CT. He was playing a Taylor 210 with double pick guards and he still sounds great. I asked him about the Martin and he said he plays it locally but doesn't like traveling with it.
