I've been around these since day one, and as a Certified Emissions Control Specialist, it was a $10k federal fine to take one off.

But I never saw this coming. Not that this is a new story, but an interesting read into the world of "Cat" thefts, which are appaling for folks hit. A local church here lost all their cats one night, multiple busses, replacement/repair cost astronomical.

Mom in law had to take her Prius to the dealer for a $600 steel plate install during the pandemic, Prius's and Ford F250's the most "popular" vehicles pegged for theft at the time.

She was told that replacing the Cat by the dealer would exceed the value of the car.

My daughter got her's stolen out from her old Jeep Cherokee, must have been ten years ago or more when she was living in New Orleans. So it isn't something new.

It’s a real problem in our town. Organized crews come up from L.A., hit several streets, then back on the freeway for a quick escape. Really hard to police as it’s so random.

I walked out one morning, saw the sawzall blade on the ground and immediately thought "oh sh!t" Yup, my 4Runner had been hit. My insurance company (Farmers) did cover it and I bought an aluminum guard plate.

And insurance companies won't cover cat converter theft.
Not true. In New York State at least, it's covered under the comprehensive. My GF had the converter stolen out of her 2006 Honda accord right in her driveway. If you have a race jack and a cordless reciprocating saw, it takes as little as a minute. Honda Accords and CRVs are numero uno for cat thefts around here.

Our mechanic installed an aftermarket converter, and the whole exhaust from the cat back, and we came out about even.

I have 2 friends in central NJ who had cats stolen from their cars parked in their driveways. They said it wasn't covered, but they never said (and I didn't ask) what kind of coverage they had.

If you have comprehensive coverage - regardless of your state or your insurance company - then a stolen converter is covered.

So your friends didn't have comprehensive, didn't understand it or chose not to make a claim perhaps because of a high deductible or fear of a premium increase.

My thoughts exactly.
