From a food service perspective, a HUGE majority of people these days ask for ranch..... it's the new white ketchup.....

Hidden Valley just introduced a thicker ranch dressing in hopes it would become the New Ketchup.

Frono, pardon the veer, but if you eat at Five Guys enough, it'll probably kill you.

Can't say I eat there all that often but my typical order is under 800 calories by that chart, which isn't too bad calorie wise for one meal out of three. However we both note that I focused on calories and not where they come from or what else is "in the package"

Where they were invented, they're "pommes frites."
During my formative years in Quebec, raw potatoes were known as “pommes de terre” (as in Europe), but French fries were “patates frites”, and were always eaten with salt & vinegar (this was long before the invention of poutine). The name was later shortened to ”frites”, parallelling the change to "fries" in English (Anglo-Quebeckers often pronounce it as “fritz”). :D
Wiki confirmed that etymology, with an additional supposition that the term "French Fries" originated with WWI American doughboys being introduced to 'em in, you guessed it, southern Belgium, which they thought, because of the local patois, was still France..

The new rage, around here anyway, is sweet potato fries!
They remind me of another time and place, when Mom used to fry long slabs of sweet potato as a treat for the hungry household.
Yum! :D
They're making inroads down here too, and they are a great "change of pace". :D

Regarding 5 Guys Burgers, I've always felt you never out grow your need for a bit of grease (in moderation). :D
Speaking of Canadian food, every time I'm North of the Border, I seek out a small bag or two of ketchup flavored chips. Not sure why you don't find them down in the lower 48?

I actually bought a bag at aldis once (discount food supermarket chain). man they were awful by themselves and tasted nothing like ketchup or chips. however, with bbq chips on a burger, they tasted pretty good (as flavoring)
