Cat had a couple gigs the other night, and out of convienence wound up playing the 1967 Starfire Bass, instead of the 1966 P-Bass, with the Jamie Mclean Band. Cool it was a TV gig too the Artie Lange show.

To me, it it really interesting to hear the differences between the two performances, taking one approach with the short scale SF I and another with the long-scale P-Bass. Cat has a cool bass line on the Lange show vid, around 1:40-1:55. It reminds me, not so much of Rick Danko, but of a song The Band did, way back when. Real nice bass playing, thanks.

Yeah like I said the Guild w/that band was not planned or intended. Cat had a regular gig earlier (with Julie Kathryn) that was a typical Starfire performance, but the ensuing JMB gig was for TV with minimal actual music being played, so she just decided to pull it off with the Guild. This was all this past Friday (and she also played the P-Bass thurs with Joe Whyte) Then sat sun and mon she played upright with the Midnight Ramble Band and Jim Campilongos band. I caught the show last night and she was smokin on the upright. She took one unreal solo. I have videos of that I can post here but need to catch up on some things so will do so as soon as I can. In speaking with Cat about her solo, I commented how fascinated I was that someone could switch from so many bands/songs/instruments, and from upright to bass guitar so seamlessly, and even more so from long scale to short, which I personally find challenging on bass (long scale). She commented that playing the Guild with JMB, instead of the P-Bass, with that band or on those songs or something...seemed difficult, or something to that effect.

I once took a "Skype" bass lesson with Cat. I wasn't really prepared but the real problem was she had the pbass and I had the JS. It was a disaster. Long scale vs short. I play one finger per fret like a guitar, and she plays the p-bass all over the road like an upright. I just couldn't even come close to following her. Will have to try that again sometime and ask her to use the Guild.

Also FWIW I have seen her play a jazz bass too, that fender sent her. Just a couple times. Not sure what that was about. I guess there are a couple videos of that too, if anyone's interested. She is an amazing bass player. Really really really good.

Crazy! I used to play with Jamie when he lived in Boulder. We did a bunch of the Nederland Acid Jazz gigs together and he also had a great band called One Flight Up with his brother Carter. I lost track of him when Dirty Dozen came to the Fox and he sat in. They asked him to tag along to the next gig in Vail and after that asked him to pack a bag and move to New Orleans on the spot. Haven't seen him since, but what a treat to see this!

that's pretty awesome. I've seen Jamie a bunch of times, and then a few months ago I finally met him when he came out to one of Cat's Puss n Boots shows. he was super cool and had some very crazy stories about basically being a white kid from Connecticut rolling with the Dirty Dozen for 5 years. Obviously he left to do his own thing, which I think is fantastic. Funny though, the Dirty Dozen replaced him with someone that looks so much like him, most people might not realize he has left, quite a while ago.

But the JMB and DDBB recently crossed paths at Brooklyn Bowl where they played a show together and sat in with each other. Jamie played and sang "Superstious" like he used to do in their set, and a couple horn players from the DDBB sat in with his band on "I Been Low." Neal Evans also played organ with Jamie that night (he usually plays sax with Soulive) so that was cool.

I would say tell Jamie to get his hands on a Guild, but it appears he has a pretty sweet endorsement deal with Gibson. he definately deserves it, super cool guy, great tunes, been popping up everywhere sitting in with everyone.
