There have been a couple of threads mentioning Catherine Popper (Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson, etc), but just came across this great, upclose and personal photo of her '67 Starfire I Burst. Yowwser!

Bass looks nice, but perhaps just a photo prop?

Read LadyTexan's post in which she acknowledges that Catherine Popper has been discussed before. Then consider using the Search function. There is enough material on LTG that asking the question indicates a serious lack of initiative. However, Catherine Popper's use of a vintage Starfire bass is well documented and it almost certainly is not just a "photo prop".

If your question was meant to imply that the instrument pictured was not a '67 Starfire I as opposed to implying that the instrument pictured was not one actually played by Catherine Popper, then the pictured bass is consistent with an early 1967 model. It has the right bridge and lacks the suck switch. It has the bass finger rest but is missing the treble finger rest. Headstock looks right. TRC appears to have correct writing on it. Hint of a label in the bass side f hole. Burst looks typical of the time. PU is almost certainly a Hagstrom or Dark Star. Knobs might be replacements.

Bottom line - there is no reason to question the identification as a '67 Starfire I or whether it is an instrument actually played by Catherine Popper.

I should probably go take my medicine now. Geeze.

A while back she was playing that bass here in NYC with a group at a club and I was about to go on with the next band. Of course i had my '68 Starfire II. I resisted the urge to geek out over this with her, as I didn't really know her at the time. But right before we hit the downbeat of the first song she waved to get my attention from the audience then opened he case to flash me her bass with a goofy grin on her face. I seem to recall calling to her, "nice bass." I've since run into her a few times and she's always been very cool.

I wonder what she was thinking when she posed for that picture, but it does showcase the bass quite nicely. I wonder about the smell? I'm not sure what happens to get a guitar to smell like chocolate although it doesn't matter what a guitar smells like so long as the smell is not obnoxious and distracting.

Thanks.

Frono, Cat is a goofy girl she just likes to have fun. the photo was taken during a shoot for her Fender endorsement, one of the many they did not use.

here is the link to her page, which needs to be updated. she has left Grace Potter's band and is currently on a global tour with Jack White. They also say her Guild is a 66...but it might be a 67. the pic of her standing there smiling with the orange jazz bass and the Fender amp is from the David Letterman show.

as for the chocolate and cigarettes, i know what u know. i think she meant thats what it smelled like when she got it. cheers

The serial number would confirm, but I vote for 1967. The bridge and the absence of the suck switch make it '67 or earlier. The location of the thumb rest, close to the pickup, and the screw holes for the missing finger rest suggest they were "offset". The change from opposite to offset occurred in 1967.

is a '67 with the opposite rests.

that is some great starfire porn! one thing i noticed is there are 2 distinct sunbursts. one is like an orange-red burst and the other is a yellow burst. interesting, i had only seen the yellow one before like Cat's bass. i have been within inches of that thing a few times, but never seen the serial #. with that said i am quite certain it is a 1967. my guess is Cat or somone at Fender simply spaced on the info, as her P-Bass is the 66. the Starfire has been widely aknowledged over the years, even by Cat herself, to be a 67.

On that subject-in regard to Starfire 1's...also from Frons pics, it seems the 1967's have the pick up in the neck, and most 66's with a few exceptions have it in the bridge. So if a 66 w/neck pick up is a "late 66" ...that may have first been sold to the public in 67...or if even in late 66-as a "1967 model" since that is a pretty significant design change, and possibly the only change from that production year? not that it really matters, as if a 66 and 67 yellow burst both with a pick up in the neck are to be identical in every way other than a serial #, and we are talking about one consecutive year...they are essentially one in the same, at least in my opinion. my gf has a Fender Mustang bass, its all original and apparently the neck is stamped 1971 but the backplate # dates it to 72. that was good enough for us.

I'll try to find out for sure about Cat's bass when she has another gig with the girls. could be a while though as all 3 of them are independently and simultaneously super busy right now and travelling all over the globe. Fender needs to update that site though, cheers

Someday I am going to put more of mt p0rn online and make a timeline for a Starfire I. While Guild was never one for adhering to the specs there are a few distinct features that allow for relative dating.

Catherine is participating in the online "Study with a Star" program where you can take a lesson from her on Skype (online video lesson). I signed up for one as i'm just starting out on bass. figured it would be a good idea at the beginning, not like guitar where it's been 13 years and I still have no idea what i'm doing. But a lot of experienced players are signing up too. I'm sure if you wanted her to use the Starfire during a lesson, you can just request that in the box where it asks what you are interested in learning.

Catherine is the coolest! This would definitely be a lesson you will never forget.

here is the link, you click on "lessons" then "bass" then "indie" and then choose Catherine-
