Compound hinge on a 60s bass case?

For some reason, I was looking at the case for my Starfire bass this afternoon with some other folks. We happened to notice that the center hinge was pretty fancy. It appears to have a double hinge, for some reason. At first we thought it may be a repair, but it sure looks too well done for that.






My Starfire 6-string case from the same era ('69) doesn't have this. Anybody else ever noticed this?

I just looked at my case, and it's the same way

I guess it's there for a reason. Hans?

Just went and looked - Mine (1966) is the same - Never noticed before.
