Wow!

Just brought my latest investment home, no pictures yet... This guitar wasn't even on my wish list because I thought it would be too expensive (late 60's Starfire IV was at the top of my list). The quilt is stunning! Original black Gator case with Hunter Green crushed velvet inside. Two things... OK, three...

1) major ding in the back of the neck. Finish is not chipped off, but the edges are deep and the cracks there would go through to the wood. Any ideas how to fix this?

2) What kind of wax/cleaner/protectant should I use?

3) Anyone have any ideas about this guitar? Hans thinks 2001, I've heard there was a pre-Fender version too - what year(s) would that have been?

Since it's a 'Custom Shop' (#6 of 20), I'm hoping the quality of Nashville is all there without the Fender and financial distractions. So far I'm super happy with it - the only detractions are previous owner's dings. It currently has super light electric strings, I'll be replacing with medium acoustic, once I've had a chance to record a test and reference recording. Since this is in effect an acoustic guitar - I believe this is the right decision.

So... what would you have paid? (wait for the pictures!)

Welcome to Guildville!

I know back-of-neck divots and dents can be filled if I understand your issue. I have a guitar w a sizeable filled dent that was repaired. The previous owner chose not to match the finish so you can see it but you can't feel it. Folks more expert than (that's a low bar  ) will hopefully chime in with how it's done.

It sounds beautiful... looking forward to pics.

Hello b0rn2w0rsh1p,

It looks like you're confusing 'Guild bought by Fender', which was during 1995, with 'Guild Westerly, RI plant closed/production moved to Corona, CA' , which was in 2001.
The Nashville Custom Shop, which is where your Peregrine was made, produced the first Peregrines and consequently those are 'Fender/Guilds' as well. So there's no such thing as a pre-Fender Peregrine.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Welcome to LTG! Sounds like you got a beautiful instrument ! Congratulations.

Some discussion about such a 2001 quilted top custom shop Peregrine was already done here:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=14288

Regarding the ding in the neck:
Have a look at Frank Ford's page and scroll down to Luthier items, maybe some items help you:
http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/pagelist.html
Just one example:
http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Luthier ... ehole.html

Otherwise you could contact our member Fixit (look under members) and ask him for advise, he obvioulsy would need a photo of the damage.

Since the guitar is most probably using Nitro as finish you have to avoid any silicone based cleaners or wax!
If a mild soapy water on a paper towel does not remove the dirt, Naptha (lighter fuel) is good for cleaning. It's a solvent that melts away dirt, grime, oils, sweat, residues, waxes and polishes, but leaves the finish. Then once you've got it clean, you can find a nice polish or wax with no silicone in it (!) and shine it up.

This stuff is good:

"Turtle Wax Express Shine" was used by the factory in Westerly as far as I understood. (our member hideglue had mentioned it previously)
I was not sure if it is good for Nitro but hideglue obviously said it was good to go.

Otherwise there was a lot of discussion here:

Congrats on a sweet guitar! I love mine!
And it sounds like they seem to be sisters! Both 2001 and Quilted Maple!
Ralf

If I remember correctly I believe jazzmang's Peregrine was Quilted Mahogany. The one that the OP has bought is Quilted Maple. They're not from the same series, so I guess you could say sisters from different fathers.

Haha! Yeah, mine is quilted Hog. I'd love to hear how the maple affects the tone of your guitar vs. mine.

Oh! I just read "Quilt" and though about Maple automatically!
I guess we need a picture of both tops next to each other! Quilted Mahogany, how cool is that!

Hans,

This is the quote from Harmony-central that confused me,

I do own two of them; a Standard and a Custom. They are fantastic guitars. The Fishman Peizo system in them is manufactured specifically for that guitar, and that tailoring gives them a better tone than any other "solid" body acoustic I've heard. They play like a 4 pound Les Paul. The pre Fender models from the Nashville Custom Shop are very rare. I hear that Fender/Guild is making them again in CA, but I wouldn't want one of those. Fender ruined Guild.

Jazzmang,

I hope this weekend I'll connect to my computer to make a reference recording with "Electric" strings. Once I have those slinkys off (they feel like .009s) I'll restring with .012 Acoustics and record again. I'll post when I have the recordings.

From what I saw, you have to post pics off-site and link to them? Guess I'll try to find directions and read them... I have a picture posted here... http://sites.google.com//site/musictoworshipby/ then look for the Peregrine page in the left sidebar. (pictures of most of my other guitars are there too)

As Hans said, plain wrong what was written there. This whole "Fender ruined Guild" discussion was a terrible discussion in the past. The same people probably used Stratocasters and Telecasters and Fender amplifiers and loved them...

Yes, but since you have them already there, you just need to do the following: You right click on your picture there and go to "Properties". You copy the URL and post it here between the IMG sign on top of your editing window.

I did this for your Peregrine below, if you click on "Quote" in the right lower corner (you van cancel afterwards) of that post, you see how I did it! I doubled the size at the end, so it looks a bit larger than on your site.
