[quote="West R Lee":3dgjvtjc]In the end, I honestly didn't think it sounded any better than my DV72, DV73 or D55. It sounded and played very nice, but I'll take my old Guilds.

That's what I was banking on when I sold my D2H. It's a really nice guitar, but I never really bonded with it, and honestly didn't want it around when the D50 comes back. I hear an ugly rumor that it'll be ready by the end of this week. I've heard that before though.

If Collings didn't float your boat, I'll bring my Bourgeois Slope D to Arlington next year now that I know how to worm my way on the plane with it. 8)

And it's Mahogany.

I don't know that I'd say the Collings didn't "float my boat" Sandy, it was a VERY nice guitar, but didn't sound any better than many Guilds I've played, but then again, nothing really does. And those folks were right next to the door just before you entered the corridor closest to the hotel. Mrs. West and I stopped by for a few minutes to talk, had a very nice conversation, and the lady invited me into the hall to play the Collings, I didn't ask. :)

Must be that innate charm of yours. 8)

The Collings D2H that I had was a really nice guitar, but I knew it wouldn't win the competition with the D50 even if it were a better guitar. The D50's a lifer, for better or worse. I hear an ugly rumor it might be done next week.

I'm not giving you a tough time Sandy, but in what way would a Collings be a "better" guitar than a nice top of the line Guild? More expensive? Without a doubt. "Select" spruce? How does is that better than say a beautiful AAA feathered sitka Guild top?

I just think "better" is a matter of opinion. And I definately don't think better and more expensive are the same thing.

Here's a Collings D model with specs. I don't see a thing in the specifications that would make this guitar superior to a high end Guild.......nothing. Both have sitka tops, both have scalloped bracing, both are fully bound. The Collings had a Braz pegdead, but a MOP Collings name inlaid......my DV's don't have the Braz peghead, :D but have the G shield inlaid in turquoise  . Both have fully adjustable truss rods, both have a nitro finish, both have EIR back and sides. Oh, the Collings has Waverly tuners. :) Sorry, I just don't see a superior or "better" guitar in the Collings and in the couple I've played, I haven't heard it either.

The Collings are very nice guitars, but the Guild upper models are too, and for the money, it's a no brainer......unless your hung up on the Collings name.

 It's gonna take him 6 months to pick it up??? Then what's his hurry Moje?

lets just say he is currently "finishing up a long vacation"! He entrusted me with some of his funds to help rebuild the guitar collection he had before his hiatus. He had a 97 D2H that he is looking to replace along with a lot of unreal vintage guitars and amps. I talked the seller of the D3 down to 2650 so thats the hurry, to get it at that price before someone else does. I am going to go check it out on Friday night.

My thoughts were, since I am going to have it in my possession for a while why not get him a great guitar that he will love and I will love TOO!

Indeed they are. I'm probably just a little concerned because my D50 has the older, heavier bracing pattern of the early '70s dreads. There was a thread about this where there were so diagrams posted in a thread that i can't find. This guitar has been gone for so long (eight months now) and it the intervening time I've bought way too many guitars (as we all know here  ). I just hope I like it as much as I think I used to when it comes back. I sold the Collings as a pre-emptive strike. I knew that if I still had it when I got the D50 back I'd want to keep both of them.

Yeah, I'm that bad...

You will.

My 2 guitars took 9 and 10 months in Nashville. Worth it.

Well folks...

I think Bill Collings builds the best acoustic and electric guitars in the world, regardless of price. I know some VERY knowledgable luthiers who feel the same way.

I played my first Collings back around 1990 and was totally smitten. Bill's largest dealer happens to be about 15 minutes from my home and over the years I have played too many of his instruments to even count them. Every single one of them has been STELLAR. Tone/Sustain/Build Quality are just exceptional in every respect.

A Collings instrument is the only one I would feel totally comfortable buying without playing it first.

But, HEY!!! I still love my other guitars too! If I didn't, I never would have bought them.

The bottomline is: If I could only own one guitar, it would have the name "Collings" on the headstock.

This one is a special order D3 also. it is a very nice guitar no doubt about that. I am just crazy about Guilds and it is not my decision to make, but I am sure I will still play the Collings a bit while I have it in my possession. I definitely like the Collings electric guitars A LOT. I played an I35 Deluxe and a 290 at the local guitar show and was very impressed by both.

You know 6, I felt a lot like you do when I first got my D2H, and totally changed my mind when the Bourgeois Slope D arrived. I feel the same way about Dana Bourgeois' guitars as you feel about Bill Collings. I think some of the problem with the D2H that I bought was that it had a repaired top crack that ran parallel to the center seam from the bridge on down. I think the repair might have deadened the top a little bit, though the guitar still sounded great, and the guy that bought it from me is very happy. There is no doubt that the guitar had some of the finest craftsmanship that I've seen, but in that respect it's no better than either of the Bourgeois guitars that I own.

If I could only own one, it would be my Slope D, but I still love all my Guilds too. Hey, variety is the spice of life! 8)

I still think that before I'd buy a new NH D55 (veering back here), I'd try to score a used Bourgeois like the one I bought for $2K. Mine's in immaculate condition, and was an absolute bargain for that price.

Oh well, the heavyweight championship match is over, it was a long and hard battle but the winner was the Collings D3. I am going to go pick it up for him tomorrow night. Will post pics when I get it.

the good news is I might have convinced him to buy me a NH made D50 or a vintage D50 of the same value as a new one. 8)

Hey I figure since I am doing all the work to find him a Collings, driving 2 hours to get it, storing it at my house for 6-10 months and doing all the negotiating then he owes me a little finders fee, right?:D

Now to find the best deal I can on a nice vintage D50 not in neck reset territory or a NH D50 Burst and convince him to hook a young brother up!
