To Hans et. al.,

Rick Neeley, of Rickety Music, found my blog about my F-512 and wrote to say that he has one as well. He sent me the following information about it:

"My F512 is numbered 68866. The number is hand printed on the label. There is no indication of where the guitar was built.
It has the large Grover tuners and thus is extraordinarily top heavy. I noticed the big Guild [at my guitar dealer's shop]. They were shipping it back to the factory. It had come in with a large crack around the back near the waist. I suggested that they fix the crack and make me an offer I couldn't refuse... I think I paid $750 for the guild. I played the 512 professionally until about 1980. I put it away and didn't come back to until 1993. The neck had pulled through the top. This was repaired and it seems to play well, although it's not quite as pretty as before the surgery."

I'm posting the photos that he emailed to me. Note the label is oval, but interestingly, has no location on it - no Westerly, no Hoboken.

Thought you guys would be interested. By the way, the owner's website might be of interest to you -- www.ricketymusic.com.

Cheers,
Barbara

Wow! When I saw the "repaired" crack, I thought to myself it would deserve a good luthier's touch up.
Still a great guitar with it's scars though.....

In between the "Hoboken oval" and "Westerly oval," Guild used a label with no location. My '71 D-44 and '72 D-35 both have the same label (Can't recall which labels my '74s have). The 686XX SN corresponds to '72 (which would be Westerly-built), so that would be the correct label style. I think the "No location oval" label was ~'70-74 or '75.... it's in Hans' book, I just can't remember. Pretty cool 512...

So is that from the same batch as yours, Barbara? One of 16?

In terms of both scarcity and desirability this has to qualify as one of Guild's rarest.

And I think I see a Guild strap in there if my eyes don't deceive me!! :)

I think, indeed, this was still the era of the F-512 being a custom-order guitar before becoming a regular model, but where did you get the 1 of 16, 'Strang? Might be right; I dunno.

Barbara's is probably a year or two bit older than this one, I think. Maybe Hans'll weigh in for sure.

I seem to recall a post of Barbara's telling of her visit to Carlo Greco's shop in which he is quoted as saying that he built 16 of those guitars.

Or maybe I just made that up. It's not even noon here, so I can't be too sure of anything.

Strang is right - Carlo did say that it was one of 16 guitars he made. But Hans later discounted that statement, saying that he's pretty sure there are many more than 16. (With all due respect to Mr. Greco, he is up in years.)

Anyway, mine is older - mine dates to the cusp of 1969/1970. I think Rick's is 1971. He is the original owner. I know Hans is interested in keeping up his database of serial numbers/models, etc., so I thought he'd like to know -- as well as all of you.

Hello Barbara,

Thanks for the photos and the info. I really appreciate you giving me that information for my database.

As far as Carlo is concerned, it's amazing how much information he has been able to give me just off the top of his head. During the many interviews I did for the research of The Guild Guitar Book, he would often come up with very detailed information about stuff that happened during the early '60s, which at that time was more than 30 years ago. Over the years I've found out that occasionally Carlo turned out to be wrong but after seeing ten-thousands of guitars, it's not surprising that one cannot keep 'm all straight. It's a miracle he remembers so many of 'm.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust
