Hey there...

So I got the GAD50 over Thanksgiving...used...from Guitar Center...and I've loved it!

Last night I noticed on the back...located where the neck meets the body (sorry...don't know the actual part name) I noticed what look like tiny cracks...where it is joined...

At first, I thought maybe they were only in the seam where the two pieces meet (which still didn't seem right) but it also looks like there are a couple tiny cracks down on the round piece where the back and neck come together...

Is this a problem? It doesn't seem normal...and last night was the first time I noticed it...

It hasn't been outside or anything like that...and I'm really new to the guitar thing...so there's no way I could fix it myself...AND...I hate to think I would have to get rid of this amazing guitar..because I REALLY like it...so much in fact that I got rid of the other guitar I had!

Any help would be great...

Thanks,
Rudy

Hi Rudy:

I reported seeing some of that at a dealer here a couple years ago but haven't heard much about it recently. But if its not getting any worse and you love the guitar, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Sounds like it's pleasing to your ear, that's the most important thing. :D

You may want to take the guitar to a good Tech.
That way you will know what the problem is and if it needs any work done.

By the way, if you are in an area that has low humidity, that is a cause of many guitar problems.
You need a hygrometer to know the humitity.
They can be purchased for under $10.00 on the internet or even at Wal-Mart.

Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that the Chinese made GADs were all finished in Polyurethane. If so, then they should NOT have weather checked, as poly is not prone to that. If my impression is incorrect, and they are actually nitro finished, then the weather checking would be understandable.

In the case where the nitro checks, it is mostly due to rapid temperature changes, as opposed to humidity changes. The changes to a guirar due to humidity are much slower in nature, and need a much longer period of time to occur, whereas temperature changes cause changes almost immediately.

HI Kostas: That's exactly what I was thinking when I read this, Guild's site says finish is high gloss polyester, don't know how that relates to polyurethane or if it's as vulnerable to checking as nitro...

Sorry, maybe it is polyester instead of polyurethane (its a "plastic" finish of one type or another, anyway). Both plastic finishes, as far as I know, are not prone to checking.

Hi Mich, welcome aboard! If you really want to set your mind at ease, take it to a luthier/guitar tech..the finish shouldn't be cracking from the usual causes like temp/humidity 'cause it's a plastic according to Guild's website. It might be cracking for some other benign reason, but you might want to make sure something isn't going wrong with the neck joint. I wouldn't have a high degree of confidence in the expertise of the typical clerk at Guitar Center BUT if they know what the finish is without you telling 'em that would be a good sign. Otherwise they can probably tell you where they send instruments for service locally and hopefully it's a guy who'll talk to you personally. Some of 'em don't actually deal with the public is all, they only do contract work. Iv'e never had a guy charge me for a consultation if you're worried about that...
Good Luck!
