Speaking to an above comment and going electric, Jeff Beck got more out his his big right hand than anyone I ever saw.

I saw TE once at a smaller venue and the show was so much about technique that I have not seen him since because he now plays larger venues and, IMO, ya gotta be close up for that kind of show.
I pretty much gave up on all stadium shows, Marc. That's pretty much the reason. If I want to see/hear them, I want to see/hear them up close.

I had a similar experience. I saw Charlie Byrd twice in a smaller venue. My then guitar teacher (who could be a bit self-obsessed) sat there through parts of the performance telling me what chords Byrd was playing at the instant. Still, I feel lucky to have seen the great Byrd at such close range.

Short aside but what killed 'em for me was the parking lot jam afterward. Last show I ever went to was the Jeff Beck/Santana double-header at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View. Magnificent show, my 2 favorites at the time.

Took over an hour and a half to get out of the parking lot afterwards. Killed the whole buzz, and all out of weed and beer, too.

Now that I'm retired I can see some of the local small shows without having to worry about having to work in the morning. Figured out a long time ago, it ain't the gettin' there, it's always the gettin' home afterward that kills ya. :D

I understand what you meant but for a brief moment I was imagining a bunch of folks pulling instruments out of their vehicles and playing, all while waiting for the traffic to clear. Thus I thought you were saying that was a bad thing. You weren't but my confusion amused me enough to share.

That's close to what actually happens. I prefer to avoid crowds but when I cannot I just plan on a long time to get out of the parking lot and on the road so I'm in no hurry to leave the venue and at least stash a book and a flashlight in the car so I can wait. Several times I was at an NFL game and there was a post-game tailgate party.

Shoreline was great back in the day, but today I still wouldn't bother.

I never paid Kottke enough attention, I figured it would be too distracting or could push me over the edge and make me forget about playing guitar altogether.

Jeff Beck got more out his his big right hand than anyone I ever saw.

I tried to do the Jeff thing after he died, even bought a guitar for it, but ultimately cannae do it with thumbnail like he did. I can't/don't grow a long thumbnail because the work I do nails can get torn off (plus I can't speed Travis pick with long thumbnail). My RH index finger nail was shattered in two places last week on a honeydo list job. Now, there's a way to get someone to stop playing. Hurt quite a bit, could have been much worse. That's when you're afraid to take your glove off and look. Analysis, thicker gloves.

Had the nail been longer it would have been worse. I pick everything with thumb and these two fingers, actually file the nails from the ouside in, feed them, they're tough enough that strings are not shredding them so instead of thin and pliable they're thick enough to shatter. This is well over a week ago now. Never had to superglue it and it doesn't even snag on stuff. I've never had this specific injury before, from a direct hit to the nail from long hardwood branch being fed into the topside of a chipper.

So I can only do Beck with a trusty old .60 or .73mm Dunlop but I can do it pretty well.

Here's a guy who could do a lot with a thumb with a big thumb.

Years ago, I saw Leo Kottke and Ritchie Havens at the same small outdoor show (for free!). The guitar playing was great but the stories and the show were what I really remember. Can't be them so I have to be me lol.

Albany, Oregon. Summer concert series called "River Rythms" Probably early 90's. For a number of years they drew really great talent. Ladysmith Black Mambazo was another great show. Dixie Chicks just before they hit it big. Still goes on today!
