Does anyone know a really good guy who can do refret jobs in the NY/NJ area?

I'm thinking about refretting my friend's 1955 X-50 after all. It is depressing watching the dead spots grow as the frets separate from the fretboard and I kind of feel like I owe the guitar (and my fret) a refret job- they have both treated me well.

dB,

My guy's in Albertson (LI) NY. I don't know if that's doable for you, but he's well worth the trip IMO. PM me if you're interested.

I don`t know how far you are from Point Pleasant, but Leroy Aiello who was at Mandolin Bros. for 23 yrs, and head of repairs and restorations for 15 has his own shop now. Super nice guy. He`s got my 1918 Gibson A4 right now, and when I pick that up, I`ll probably be dropping off my D-40. Maybe not the cheapest, but very fair IMHO and I`m guessing that`s not ( or shouldn`t be ) your main concern on a 55 X-50. Phone 347-249-5181

thanks to both of you for the suggestions!

I will check them both out. No I don't want a cheapo job- I have pretty demanding standards with the quality of fret crowning and this guitar deserves better than just a chop shop. I'll check to see where on LI the one guy is but that is a pain to get to from NJ. Point Pleasant is a bit of a haul but I could combine that with another trip.

Anyone know anything about Raritan Bay guitar repair in Freehold? I've heard they are good too.

DB,

This could be your man. Check out the site, which includes a pretty impressive bio. I currently live in MA, but spent most of my life in Bergen, Morris and Essex counties, and this is one guy I have heard of (but fortunately never needed). He is located in Bridgewater, probably not more than 20-30 miles away from you.

Good luck!

I can highly recommend Bill Baker at Daves Sound, in Whippany NJ (not far from Morristown.) He refretted two of my guitars - including doing a wonderful job on a '66 ES-335 - and has worked on pretty much everything I own. He does excellent setups too. A very sensible guy, always has good advice and knows how to listen.

I'd like to expand this thread's scope.

In general I think I need to start developing a relationship with a local luthier/ technician for set-ups too- the guy I was using got snapped up as a traveling tech by a band going on an international tour. The suggestions that have been given so far have been great but any other suggestions would be very much appreciated!
